At least part of the cause is probably the oil being injected into the engine -- it is unlikely that the motor oil burns as cleanly as gasoline.

Haven't there been some reports that higher-milage 8's experience less soot in their tailpipes? Like the possibility that the ECU leans it out after a certain point

Some other cars have the same black carbon on the tailpipes as well. Just look around. In some cases, the design of the tailpipe ends/extensions make this deposit more noticable. Such is the case with the RX-8 OEM tailpipes.

A small dab of almost any polishing compound will take it off in a couple rubs...

Warm water and a mild detergent will do the trick. My old B16A2 Civic had the same problem of running rich when VTEC kicked in, and the little spot clean every once in a while was easy.

it's a muffler, people. it's meant to be for the wasted fumes of the engine. waste is dirty. c'mon, now.

NEVR Dull works well for the hard to get off grime on the tips. I shined up the outer edges but left the insides alone. What's the point if they're used for waste fumes anyway?

i only clean the outside of the tips. it's the only worthwhile part of the exhaust tips to clean since carbon deposits are coming out of the pipes

Amazingly, I have had very good results with zaino to polish them and keep them clean.

^^^ I sure don't understand your emoticons.

*** HOLE ??? C'mon, the exhaust tip is no more disgusting than any other part of the car prone to getting dirty. Cleaning inside the exhaust tip ranks with cleaning and dressing inside the wheel wells, inside the front air scoop, etc.--a little compulsive, maybe. But it sure improves the appearance of the vehicle.

Once the tips are well-polished, keeping them clean is simple--usually just soap and water, an occasional NEVR DULL inside and out.

unless you can easily afford weekly visits to a pyschiatrist I would suggest contacting your local Dirty Exhaust Tips therapy support group

I found something that works well at keeping exhaust tips clean - Rejex.

http://www.corrosionx.com/rejex.html

I just made an 1100 mile trip, and it worked well on my tips, and rear end. The C6 rear end really accumulates dirt, and Rejex did a good job of keeping it clean. You can also use it on wheels, and everything else for that matter.
