cheapest route to snow safety?

Ok, winter is coming and I live near Chicago so I'm going to see snow.

I have a 2004 AT with the sport package (larger brakes).

I'm looking for the cheapest way to get tires on it for the winter.

How cheap have you guys managed to get your winter wheel/tire setup and how did you do it?

Just under $1,000 rims & tires https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...2&page=4&pp=15

You can find a used set on this board for less from members that have sold their 8.

I bought a POS 1994 Chevy Cavalier for $500 to drive on snow days, was cheaper than buying new rims/tires. I drove it around 10 times last winter, I live in Utah btw, lots of snow here.

Dang, I don't want to spend $1000 on new rims+tires and I don't have the parking space available for the extra car.

Anyone know of a franchised used tire/wheel place (or of one in the chicago suburbs I could go to)?

you can always just buy a set of winter tires for the OEM wheels and have them mounted to the stock wheels

costs about 700 or so?

What I did was go to discount tire, see what they had in the way of just tires to fit on my 18" wheels. all their stuff was pretty expensive, so I showed the guy the tires i found on tire rack.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....e1=yes&place=0

Then he beat the price, so I was able to get a set of 4 for $638 out the door, or with the replacement program, it came to ~$704. Getting them installed today.
they even have better dry/wet traction ratings than the stock bridgestones.

This is the route I went - all seasons. I put the Pirelli PZero Nero M+S tires on for $628 delivered, plus another $74.00 for mount and balance - about $700 out the door. Then, I sold my OEM tires to another club member for $425 for the set! Total net cost - about $375.

Although if you are planning on using your 8 in the snow wouldn't you want to get Blizzaks or similar so you have good traction. You would oly be using them 3 month out of the year so they should hold up fairly well.
