My choices were 4:
1) RX8
2) MazdaSpeed3
3) VW 4-door GTI
4) MX5 Miata
All 4 were in basically the same price range, and each has its pros and cons. The RX8 has the worst mileage and the most "special needs" engine, but is the coolest looking. It was also the most expensive sticker price, but I worked that down a good ways. The Miata is an incredible car, but too small for my tastes (I'm single and childless but I still love having 4-doors for some reason). GTI and Speed3 are beautiful cars and have the most power in that group, but they don't stand out in any way. The GTI looks like a Rabbit, and the Speed3 looks like, well, a 3. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE hatchbacks! My favorite vehicle ever was a Golf TDI, and I often kick myself for selling it. But I just didn't want another traditional hatchback body. My 6 is a hatch, but it doesn't look like it.
So, I had a lot to weigh before making my decision. I still feel I chose wisely. It's a great weekend car, and the handling is something one cannot appreciate until they drive it for themselves.

I looked at one of those nearly 18 months ago before I bought the 8.
I decided I wanted something other than another Holden.
If the question came up today this would be a real contender.
$10000 cheaper than either the RX-8 or R8 (G8) and by all accounts leaves it for dust.
(The Pontiac that is)
Pity it is a Ford.
