I think that the advice that Smoke Honda gave you is excellent.

Have the dealer, friend, neighbor, etc drive the 8 home for you. Then in the evening when there is little traffic ... practice in the streets or in a large open parking lot.

It seems like you got the basics roughly. You can try going on the www.standardshift.com site for videos and advice from hardcore MT drivers.

I think what you should try getting down is the friction point (when the clutch first engages the transmission). What I first did was to depress the clutch and slowly release it until you feel the gears engaging. You can get the car going with out any gas if you let the clutch go slow enough. After you get a feel of the friction point, you can now learn to simultaneously release the clutch and apply gas.

Switching gears is the easy part ... starting is the hardest for noobs. On hills, the emergency brake trick is excellent. I still do it to this day.

You'll hate the car for the first few days, but it'll be worth it.

I think that if you stall it 20 times it won't hurt the car in the long run. As long as you have the car properly warmed up, there shouldn't be flooding problems.

I also think that in the past, there have been a couple of threads on how to drive MT in different situations (hills, downshiftiing, etc). Good luck!

I'm pretty sure i kno the basics, push cluth switch to first, gas it to a point (something with rev matching?), push in cluth while lettin go of gas, switch gears, slowly let go of cluth while gassing, right?
Stalling a lot is not a problem, its the clutch that you have to worry about. If youre new at driving manual, youre going to put some serious wear and tear on your clutch, thats unavoidable. Luckily, as long as youre not retarded, it shouldnt damage the clutch too much to actually affect the lifetime of the car. plus there should be waranty if you do damage it. Just be concious of that when you learn and try to not burn the clutch too much. But like i said, extensive clutch burn is unavoidable for new manual drivers.

when you start, its all about training your left foot. try to train your left foot to let go of the clutch as slow as possible. until you get a good grasp of the catch point when the transmission is connected to the engine. then you can try to start the car faster and faster. just keep doing this in first gear, start and stop, and repeat. Once you get first gear down, the rest is a breeze in comparison.

The biggest tip I can offer you is, dont stare at the rpm meter when you learn. It makes you divert your attention and not concentrate on the right things and make you nervous. Just listen to your engine, and look at the road ahead.

That's why you go with someone else, so that they drive.

The salesmen came with us initially but then let the two of us take it out on our own after we dropped him off. We had it out for probably 30 minutes at least.

It works especially if the dealership is busy.
