same issue with me just a few weeks ago. Transmission completely blew while crusing down the interstate.. went to upshift to get onto the ramp for my exit and it wouldnt go into any gear. Towed it to Mazda, and they said it was abuse, $1100 for a new clutch, would have it ready by noon the next day. I had a fit, the car as 13k miles on it and I baby my 8, I dont drive it hard often (but hello, is it not a sports car?).. They said it must have been raced due to the clutch being so torn up. Actually they said they suspected I raced it.. that is obsurd.

I battled (and i mean screaming fits on the phone) with Mazda NA through three people, finally a week later the district rep returned a verdict of "guilty" to me through my local dealers service manager. He called and said mazda will definately NOT cover it under warranty. This was going on two weeks w/o my 8 (ugg). So being honest, and knowing I had NOT put any unusual stress on the clutch, I figured I should not get an OEM clutch (I am not shelling out 1100$ every 13k for a new tranny), and bought an ACT performance clutch kit, had my car towed from the dealership to a reputable outside mechanic, and had the clutch put in there. I was a bit surprised as it was my 3rd Mazda in 16 years from the same dealership (2 miatas, then the 8). And they had completed all the maintenance on my miatas. I was shocked at how Mazda handled this. The dealership (John Finger Mazda-Greenville, SC) was really nice, and down to earth with me, just kept telling me it was out of their hands, up to mazda. But they were in fact the ones telling MNA it was an abused clutch (!?!).

The new clutch is definately different, a lot more sensitive, Im having to relearn how to drive it in some ways, especially hills in first, but there is piece of mind knowing Im not burning it up by driving it a little rough. It was only 800$ for parts, shipping, labor, and the tow from the dealer to the mechanic.

Referring to an earlier reply, I drove my 94 miata (still have it) until I got my 8 a year ago. The miata has 155k miles on it, original clutch, never ever ever been in the shop for anything other than routine maintenance except new spark plug wires and timing belt change. 155k on the original clutch. I got an 8 because it felt like a beefy miata.. handles like my miata, but more power and face it, the rx8 is just plain out hot. I got a lot of girly comments on my miata after 11 years! It was a hard choice against the 8 or the new miatas, they are hot, but Im glad I got the 8. Still though, if issues were to continue, Id swap this 8 for an MX5, even with the (what I feel) crappy way mazda blew me off as a loyal customer. Face it though, there is no replacement car for the 8. 350z and G35's are great, but they are no 8.. in a uniqueness factor.

Transmission is the only problem Ive had except for the flooding TSB that was completed a few months ago (starter and plugs). The dealer had that completed in a few hours while I waited, no questions asked.

It seems mazda has definate issues with the stock transmissions on the 8's. Any of you that are having transmissioin problems at early miles (or late even) might want to start saving a little money and opt out of a rebuilt OEM from the dealer and skip the dealer all together and get an aftermarket tranny that can handle more torque/heat. Id hate to think I might have got impatient and told the mazda service dept to go ahead and charge me 1100 and put the oem back in there and then it start going bad in another 10-15k and having a repeat of this whole horror story.

Sorry you guys have had issues with the Mazda dealers in your areas. But you have to understand that giving you a loaner (be it lower, higher or equivalent value to your car) is completely up to the dealer. It has nothing to do with Mazda. I have no problem driving a loaner or any value. I actually have to drive an hour to get that because my "local" dealer does not participate in the "Mazda Assurance Plan." I was really pissed at them until I found out that certain dealers don't play well.

Premier Mazda in Georgetown, TX provides the best service I've had with any car...compared with VW, BMW, Honda and Chrysler over the past 10 years.

If you want great service, find a better dealer within a search radius of about 75 miles and take your dollars elsewhere. That's the only real way to effect big businesses.

I think it is more a case off how the DEALER treats you rather than Mazda. Some dealers give nice rentals...others don't.

Unless you read "Location: Bronx, NY." at the top right of his posts. Why would his Jersy Dealer care that the car costs 40k in some foreign currency?

$40k ->$10k of after market addons?

Let's face it, unfortunately there will be from time to time lemons...whether they be cars, lawnmowers, refrigerators, etc. I would be surprised if Mazda does not stand behind their warranty. If they honor the warranty and your car runs fine after the problems are addressed, why would you want to sell it? I don't know about the law in your state, but in Florida we have a very good Lemon Law which has teeth. Have you checked out what recourse you have in your state? Good luck.

the problem is mazda is not going to stand by it after this repair...although since there is no signs of abuse they really cant

Consider a Z4 yet? Beautiful car. Of course it is a bit more than $22k but if you can work a good deal out and get a fair amount for your trade in it might be worth it. I know you mentioned not buying used, but there are tons of great cars in the 500-2000 mile range for thousands less.

For example:
Brand new BMW - $35k
Same car w/ 2000k miles - $24-28k with same warranty and probably still smells like new

just a suggestion... g'luck nonetheless.

You are missing the appearance package in that list.

I don't have the door edge guards, cassette player, anything "cargo" related, or the all weather floor mats and the MRSP on mine, as per Mazda website is $36,104.

When I take my Lexus in for service, they send me to the Enterprise rental desk located in the service area (it is free for warranty work, but it is from Enterprise not Lexus). On the other hand, when I take my Toyota in for service, I NEVER get a free rental. So it doesn't depend on the MANUFACTURER, it depends on your DEALER.

OH my god a whole week without getting in the forums!!! i think ill shoot myself. either way the reason why i acted like that was cause you do get this type of comments from people here. i dont know if mazda or someone pays them to argue agaist the problems we get here. either way like i said before you do what you have to do as a moderator, is your title. i didnt get the point where you defended me right. but if that was the case then my apologies for goin after you.
