I need help with my tires please!

Hi guys!

I have an 05 GT with the appearance package (if that makes a difference).

I live in Colorado, and I need snow tires! I would prefer studded or those ones with the chopped up nuts in them, but they say they aren't made in this tire size. What would you recommend for snow tires? I can get Blizzack (sp?) but those are just better tread, no added traction.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Cool Nuts....

I got some cheap 17" rims, maybe $100 each, and put Toyo Proxess(sp?) on.

They are the ones "with nuts"

Great in our arctic neighborhood, and softer ride than stock.

It's not just the tread pattern. Snow tires use compounds that have better traction.

I live in Virginia, and it's been a long time since I used anything but all-seasons. But back when I did use snow tires I tried studded regular snow tires and also Goodyear F32 without studs. I don't know if F32 s are still made, and if they are how they compare to others, but at the time they were the star of snow tires. They worked much better for me than the studded tires did.

Dunlop Winter Sport M3's are very good in the snow, as are Blizzaks. Dunno about studded tires.

I run the Dunlop M3's too, but I don't know how well those would fair out in the mountains where chains or studs are required. Isn't it possible to have a regular snow tire sent to a specialist and get studded?

Blizzaks, M3's, Pirelli Snow Sports WILL have better traction. The stock tires shouldn't be used in snow or even when it's very cold. They become bricks and lose most of their traction. Good snow tires are designed to work at low temps and in the -snow-.

You can switch to 17" tires and rims for a greater variety of snow tires if you like. Unless your streets are VERY hill you should do well with just snow tires. Ask yourself how many times do I go up and down hills? What tires do my other cars have, neighbors cars. My brother lived on a silly hill in VT and everyone had studs. His jeep slid out of the driveway before he had time to get studs and was destroyed.

These are studdable but you'll need 17" rims, $15/tire extra for studs

I don't know what the weather in Colorado, but it is my understanding with studded tire you can only drive on roads covered in deep snow or on dirt roads.

If you drive them on paved roads without enough snow on it you will not only damage your tires but the road as well. And you can end up with a hefty fine with a requirement to prove that you have had the tires removed from your car.

Snow tires don't need to have studs. Hell you don't even want studs unless you are living in a region that is snow covered all winter long and plan to go rally racing in the snow.

This also means that you would be unable to use any highway. (Unless the leave highways covered in snow even then if enough cars are going over it the snow will melt)

Do people in your area use studded tires?

Perhaps a better solution would be to use good snow tires and get a good chain system. Then when things are bad you can put them on and when things are better you can take them off.

Kimmycat--

I just moved from Colorado Springs last month, and I had Pirelli Snowsports for my G35 coupe. Worked like a charm. I never ventured to the ski slopes though...I mean, who are we kidding driving RWD sports cars in the snow? I don't care what tire you have, you're still not going to be 4-wheelin' through the snow.
The snowsports were very good on the dry/wet roads too...a buddy of mine actually uses this tire as a year-round tire.
You could always buy a 4WD beater for those snowy days in the rockies!

I havent driven the Pirelli 240 in the snow, but they are great in the dry. Just stay away from Goodyear, I had them on the MBZ. I didnt like it, heck my old WS50 Blizzaks were better

My Pirelli's do great in the snow and dry conditions.

cat did you ever get tires? I'm sure Colorado is snowy or cold. The stock tires aren't safe below 40 degrees IMO.
