I know people with an almost new VW Passat that had to fork out $2500 for a transmission fix not covered by warranty due to previous owner being an idiot. Still didn't hate on the car.

Pissing and moaning doesn't get you anywhere. Complaining about 45 bucks for breaking something in the car doesn't make sense to me. OP should buy a 10 year old civic if he needs a cheap beater.

The 8 is quirky though, but do some bloody research before buying a car is all I have to say to that

 

My corolla is literally falling to pieces after 8 years and 82000kms... and i'm talking about a repair bill of around 2000€ in PARTS only, for a car that's worth maybe 3000€

 

As do I, 81,000. I have no idea why people keep having theirs break. Maybe they are yanking on the visor itself instead of applying pressure right at the clip where it snaps into and out of place.

My friend asks why he should have to do that, but it's the best way even if it was made of titanium, simple the least amount of pressure needed to clip or unclip it.

My 8 has had less issues than my Corolla did. .Including my 8's engine has lasted longer (81,000) than my Corolla's engine (72,000)

Doesn't the visor problem have something to do with heat? Something the northern parts of the country don't get as much of as the south.

 

I could see extra heat weakening the glue maybe? I still know several people up this way that go through them faster than the 8 goes through oil. (from their perspective)

Unless the visor can break from just sitting in the sun without any interaction from a creature that has some type of blood pumping through it, be it animal or human or insect, etc... I still believe that the primary reason is people yanking on the visor in ways that applies force to the visor body itself trying to get some small component of that force applied to the clip.

Whatever else may weaken the visor or not. Who knows. Mine might be made of eggshells at this point, but I've always used two fingers lightly, one on the clip one on the 'barrel' that goes in the clip, I simply don't apply force to the visor itself. Never have. And it's in perfect condition.

i get your points, but as an owner in tx where you repeatedly see 110 degrees and up, yes, it is heat related. i don't slam my visor down or up, and mine broke. it took 5 years or so, but it just gave out one day. just sayin'

 

YMMV, but admittedly Toyotas aren't what they used to be. They took a big dip in quality starting with the 2002ish Camrys, when Toyota sped up their product cycle and tried to become the Japanese GM.

 

My last Toyota was my 02 Corolla, and my experience with that whole mess has sworn me off from owning one of their cars again. Not the typical "I had a problem with 1 car so the entire line must be garbage" opinion though. In general, they make great cars. It's why they are as big as they are. But I refuse to own something that has such a colossal lack of post-purchase support. The entire duration of ownership, every time I had to deal with the dealer was like getting slowly disembowled with a spoon, even when I was paying out of pocket and not seeking a warranty claim. And then when my engine blew from the oil sludging problem (which they agreed was a covered warranty issue and paid for the rebuild, the sludge clogged two sprayers, I had proof of all maintenance), it took them 2 months to do the 6 hour rebuild, fought against giving me a loaner for 3 weeks (which was spelled out clearly in the extended warranty), I finally got the car back and they had removed most of the bolts from my dash and it fell on my legs as I was leaving the parking lot (and then wanted me to schedule an appointment to come back in a few weeks to get it fixed for free), side to side scratches all over the roof (like they slid boxes back and forth), had apparently lost my original lug nuts so when I got a flat a few weeks later it took 3 different lug wrenches to get THAT 4-lug wheel off, another 2 sizes to get the rest of the mismatched lugs off the other wheels, and to top it off, the reinstallation of the engine to the transmission was done improperly and a seal was out of place and it drained the transmission fluid and fried the transmission (which another toyota dealer which discovered that said it was the dealer's bad service, the warranty company agreed, and the original dealer said it was a warranty issue, no one blamed me, but no one would pay for it).

I ended up suing them and going round and round with them in court for a couple years.

The entire time Corp Toyota refused to exercise any level of suggestion, instruction, or control over the situation to either their finance arm (that held the warranty), or to either dealer involved (one that diagnosed the transmission issue, the other who screwed everything up to begin with).


I was laughing my *** off at their complete inability to manage the PR issue of the 'sudden acceleration'.

Trust me, your issues are minor. You would've killed yourself if you had to repair some of the stuff I had to on my previous 8. Be grateful, spend a couple hundred bucks, and enjoy the car.

 

It took me two sets of visors to realize you have to put them up and down like they are made of paper mache if you use them as much as me.

 

The visors would break just by moving them to the down position to block the sun. No yanking involved. I went through 2 or 3 sets.

 

One for me already, thank you.

Those are expensive and cheaply made. Probably from China.
