Yes, that is basic thermal dynamics. All metals swell as they heat up. Even piston engine blocks swell as they heat up. There isn't "a way around it". F1 engines are built to such tight tolerances that the engine is technically seized when it's cold, it won't move. It has to be warmed up through externally heated fluids before the metals expand correctly to allow the engine to move.

Yeah but...usually it acts like this when the temperature hits over 100, below that its okay. Anyway, have you ever replace the plugs, coils, and wires? With mine, one of my friend who owns an rx8 too said that all i need is a tune-up. I never had a tune-up yet since i bought the car in 07, and now it has 37k+ miles. Usually, you need a tune-up at around 30k miles or so. So, you may need to replace the coils, plugs, and wires, and that should help with your issues, good luck.

You probably both need an engine rebuilt.
Worn coils have very little to do with hot start up problems.

That is like 113° Fahrenheit, how can you tell anything is hot in that kind of temperature?

If the cat was clogged bad for a long period of time and overheating, then there is a good chance your engine is hurt. The best thing you can do is seek out a Rotary Shop (Mazda Dealership maybe) and have them do the correct test procedure for compression.

I am not sure how far you are from a dealership, according to Mazda's website, I do not see anything in your country.

MAZDA:Middle East and Africa | Distributor List

You may have to do some research and see if you can find a independent shop that specializes in rotaries.

The tool for the compression test is very specific and very expensive.

Mazda OEM Rotary Engine Compression Tester

Cheaper here:
Rotary-engine Compression Tester System

In a pinch, such as you are, you can do it with a conventional compression tester like you get in any auto parts store. You remove the schrader valve and watch the needle while someone cranks the engine, you have to pull a fuse to disable the ignition and fuel.

You can watch the needle and see what kind of compression it has, if it does not have 3 bounces the same then something is wrong.

This is all worst case scenario stuff, you may just need to replace the coil packs and spark plugs. Personally, where I would start.

With the cat out you may get a check engine light, the car will not go into limp mode though so you are o.k.

Good luck!!

Smile I'm new as well, needed some info!!

Hi guys and gals,

I'm also new to the club!!!I just bought an rx-8 '07,automatic transmission with almost 130K kilometers on it..

I just have some questions,

First of all,how do I save gas using automatic transmission?I saw some posts saying that driving slowly is a good idea, but some others said it doesn't actually matter, can anyone help please?because my first fill up gave me 14.3L/100km,which is pretty bad..

Secondly, how often do I need to rev 6000rpm?Do I really need to do that so that the carbon won't build up?even if my rx-8 is an A/T?

Thirdly, does anyone who lives in coquitlam knows where is the best place to cure dents? And where is the best place to have the car cleaned up(interior and exterior and engine maybe?)?

Cheers

Have you read the new owner's thread yet? Gas mileage is covered there, as is redlining.
