Yes, and me and my RX8 are going to auto heaven when we die cause we have accepted 3000 miles as our true savior. You are going straight to Heck to burn for eternety with all the SRT-4s, vegas, Aztexs, and pintos. You will also be forced to drag against stock 1963 vw bugs and lose everytime. (oh the horror!)

I won't be changing the oil based on mileage but on time instead. I will almost assuredly hit the 6 month mark before even the low 5000 mile interval. Probably get to 3500-4000 miles at the 6 month mark. Besides I changed it at 1500 miles when I changed the differential and transmission oils to get rid of the break-in debris.

Just my opinion here........after my first oil change at 3,000 the Mazda mechanic took me back and let me watch the oil change. He noted the dark black color of the oil after only a few thousand miles and suggested that if I wanted to keep the car, it would serve well to change it every 2,500 or so.

I have tried to adhere to this based on this one time visual inspection. Was the oil still good even though it was almost black, I dont know. Does the heat damage the oil quicker given the operating temp of the car, dont know. I am just offering what I saw, I cant say that there is any science behind it.

Run any oil in any car for a couple hundred miles and it will become "dark black".

3k and now running all syn fluids (eng, trany, diff) made the switch at 8k miles.

Add 1qt per 1k miles, change oil/filter at 3k miles

change trany diff ever 30k miles.

Your oil retains >95% of its lubrication and other packages even at 3000 miles (Edit: not refering to track miles!). (search other posts here or anywhere on the 'net.) Changing it at 3000 miles just ensures it never goes below that. Your "mechanic" is just trying to make money. Was this near the end of the month? I am sure the boat payment was due (ala Click and Clack)

only way to determine the proper oil change interval for your driving situation is to do a Used Oil Analysis on the oil you just changed out, visual inspections are not accurate gauge of oil condition...

Quaker State Advance Q 5w20

K&N Oil Filter HP-2008 Every Oil Change (I still have 3, it fits 2 of my cars so its good)

Oil Change every 1500~2000 miles.

Why ? Well maybe I love my car so much that I want to give her the best.

Cost alot? Maybe, lets see.

Those Oil I think I got it for like 4-5 bux a Quart, and I get 4 every time so make it 5 bux a quart w/o the tax is like 20 bux.

Oil filter around 9-10 bux each, make it 10.

I saw some ppl do their own oil change and they just pour that crap into the sewer in front of their doors, I believe thats illegal and I think we're all too lazy to bring the old oil to the shop. The place I go to fix my cars, charge me 10 bux just for labor for the oil change (I got my own oil and filter)

So the total is around 40 bux for each oil change

and I think I get 1,500-2,000 miles every month or maybe month and a Half.

You guys can do the math.

While I didn't see anyone mention "preventative meds" perhaps they meant "preventative care"? Pound of x worth a gram of y and crap like that. See https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...hlight=screens

Thanks for the perspective guys. The mech is actually an FD owner and enthusiast - he just had bad info then. Agreed the only way to really know is to do an analysis of the oil coming out.

I was using 3K miles until a coolant bottle failure killed the original engine at 96501 miles. IR Performance, who installed the replacement, has recommended a 2000 mile interval, and I plan to go with that, as I have just recently completed the break-in.
