Do you really think you'll actually use it much in city driving?? I doubt it; It'll probably just add confusion if anything

The navi does not cost that much. It's $1,721 from the dealer.

1700 is not bad but at that price i still don't think its worth it.

Would anyone suggest buying a "portable" device instead of the factory Nav (Garmin Street Pilot III)? I'm thinking that the factory unit is expensive, plus I could take a Garmin to other vehicles.

I only recommend the "portable" GPS, if you want to look ghetto.

I had a high end Garmin.
Pros of an aftermarket GPS:
- Portable, you can bring it around to other cars.
- Faster, you can get a high end unit that has a faster refresh
- More colors, again, a high end unit will have a nicer display than the factory navi. But we're talking close to a grand for the GPS.
Cons:
- OEM is built in, no wires, no mess, and it puts itself away when you turn off the car.
- OEM unit knows how fast the car is going, and has sensors that can track the cars location. So if GPS signal is lost, it can still figure out where you are going on the map.
- You can't get factory navi once you buy a car without it.
- Looks like *** sitting on your dash, and it's easily stolen.
I happened to have a portable high end GPS and still thought the mazda navi was worth it. In the long run, it's only a few bucks more and adds value to the car.

my thought was.. how often do I actually get to use it?
3 times a year? keep the car 5 years.. that's 15 times.
That's over $100 per time of usage.
Not worth it to me. I rather get lost. Can be interesting too.

For most of us the navigation is a waste, even for those of us who have it. It is more of a toy then anything, whether those of us who have it want to admit it or not. I have used mine legitimately once so far, but other times I just used it to play around with, and so see if it can find short cuts. I admit it is fun to play around with. Did I need to get it? Absolutely not. I never really use it. The thing with me was if I was gonna treat myself to a car like this, I was not going to leave any option untaken. It costs me about $1700 extra, but I had to have the top of line rx8. When the mazdaspeed rx8 comes out, I'll trade it in for top of line, but if price gets too high, this may be a feature I remove to help afford it.

I suppose for people who don't remember places they have been, or where they are ever going, or frequntly drive a lot of miles to many different desinations, I guess it could be of significant use. It's becoming like cable tv and cell phones or even internet. Youngsters today can't imagine not having them. I've been driving for many years without navi, and I did just fine. I admit I got it because I refused to buy an rx8 without every single option. This would be very useful in the SUV we own, more so then my rx8 that's for sure. That's our vacation vehicle, and it would certainly come in handy.

My problem is I have the uncanny ability to think I'm going the right way when I'm heading the opposite direction. I'd be lost without either my spouse in the car, or my navi.

I like the navi because it has a "detour" function which basically shows you a few other alternate routes (different roads or different freeways, or both) with two clicks of the ****.
Very very handy when sitting in LA traffic with 30 miles to your destination.

Having it look "ghetto" is not a concern as I receive little joy from superficial external validations.
JasonHamilton's points of "easy theft" and "car sensors" are definately food for thought.
