How much/long to program a new key?

My 05 GT came with only one key. So, I bought a one from Rosenthal and the remote part of it from eBay. I programmed the remote myself and got the key cut at ACE. I cannot program the key myself because I have only one key that can start the car. Went to the dealer and the service guy said that it will take an hour to program the key! That's $90 to program one key!!! He tells me that the key usually does not work until the process is repeated multiple times and that takes about an hour....

Anybody who got their key programmed by the dealer, please... how long does it take? I have a feeling that an hour labor is too much for this job.

Thanks in advance.

I did read that thread. It says I need two keys. I have only one. No spare, no valet.

Did you buy your car new? If so, go back to the dealer and get the other keys.

My car came with both keys, but no valet key. I told the service guy, and they got me the valet key and they paid for it. They programed it, and didn't need both my keys. The service department must have another way to program it.

servcie dept has a wds.. basically a win98 box that hooks into the pcm and let you do just about anything. If you do take it to the dealer it takes all of 5 seconds do dump the keys and add them in. If I were you I'd ask them to delete the other keys, You are supposed to get 2 black keys and one grey valet and generally 1 cut blank to make copies from later.

Bought the car used from a Mitsu dealer. It did not come with the extra keys and the tire repair kit. I have to either buy one of the kits or a spare tire.
