If it were a 4-banger, it wouldn't be an 8. It would sadly remind you of what was once a great car. Like Kermit the Frog—without Jim Henson. Inspector Clouseau—without Peter Sellers. James Bond—without Sean Connery. An imposter.

That is the real question. My only hope is for one last generation of great cars with great engines. After that, we'll all be forced into hybrids or pure electrics. I'm not opposed to that in the long run, but they're just not good enough yet. Eventually, 'though, you can put me down for a Frazer-Nash Namir.

Would I consider owning another rotary powered sports car? Definately. However to say I would buy the next RX simply based on an engine upgrade, sight unseen (undriven), would be premature. If I were in the market for a new sports car and Mazda was still in the game they would be high on my list.

What no happy face?

I will not buy a happy face car.

Even though the 16x will have 170 Torque and 270 hp with bettr gas milage it depends upon the competition.

I've started my search for a 1984 - 1988 Porsche 911. However I will be keeping the RX8 for a long time...afterall it has 83k left on the motor warranty and I need to carry my kids around when where not in the Odyssey.

Just put a 20B into your 8 once your Renesis dies. That's my plan...in 3 years or so...when they'll hopefully be less expensive.

next generation RX
In developing the next-generation RENESIS, Mazda made a thoroughgoing revision of engine dimensions including the trochoid rotor housing, adopting a longer stroke and larger displacement of 1600cc (800cc x 2) aimed to raise thermal efficiency and boost torque at all engine speeds. By employing the Hydrogen RE design policy of a direct injection system and aluminium side housing, as well as various other measures, we are further promoting the rotary engine’s merits of light weight and compact size.

I buy it once it came out.....

Gee, Have some faith in Mazda 05rx8mazda!...

Mazda have been putting out some pretty class leading models over the last 6 years or so, for a small company they have done very well.

They like most manufacturers have had the sh*t knocked out of them recently, they will bounce back.

I think Mazda finally know what works well for them, they just have to sell more cars in the US, it is the US which is not improving for Mazda like the rest of the world has for them.

MNAO growth has been pretty poor really, a few good months, but they need to do a lot better.

I'm calling it early... I'm betting that the RX-8 has 1-2 more model years. Think about it -- Why would Mazda invest in a redesign for the 2009 model year if they weren't going to use it for 2-3 years? That wouldn't make financial sense.

So, in 1-2 years, I think we'll bid goodbye to the RX-8 and Mazda will replace it with a new two-door RX-7 and four-door (or four seater) RX-9.

Whether we get a standard two-rotor, three-rotor, and/or a turbo is anybody's guess. I figure it will come down to price and fuel economy.

^can almost guarantee no 3 rotor unless they can perfect emissions(haha) and fuel mileage and reliability....def will b a 2 rotor possibly a turbo but they better perfect those apex seals before they get too far into that for warranty issue...

of course I would love to see a 3 or a 4 rotor but the truth is we here in the US prob will never see it in production cars....

Well, if the 16X makes the same torque/liter as the current motor, then it would have about 195 lb/ft, so over 200 is not unlikely considering the numerous design improvements besides the obvious increase in displacement.

If:

270hp/195lb-ft in another 4 door/4 seater package= Most likely pass

270hp/195lb-ft in a real sportscar a la FD3S (<2800 lbs)= Most likely buy

330hp/240lb-ft turbo'd in a car like above= Absolutely will buy

All I care about is the braking and handling and it will likely be better than the 8. Gas mileage I could give a witch's titty about. And power, it will have enough to cruise with some authority on the highway. Sign me up when my 8 dies. It now has 92K and runniing strong.

I'll buy it. Reguardless of what it ends up in. I want an engine that it just as much fun as one of my ported ones without all the headaces.

I really love the rotary, but I find it hard to ignore the lack of TQ anymore. 1600cc won't change that much.

Camaro SS i'm thinking next.
