Just finished my very first tank this morning. 253 miles/13.492 gal = 18.75mpg (light came on at about 245). A little lower than I hoped for, but I'm ok with that. What really hurt though was freaking $2.50/gal for a fill up with 89. Ouch!

By the By....

My mileage got better as soon as I started using 91 octane. Owners manual states that 91 is the "Premium" grade the car was designed for.

I have noted others using less than 91 and also getting good mileage. I keep mine at 90-91 by mixing 87-89 and 93 octanes. Hard to find 91 here.

As I have stated in the past, I think some of the mileage problems are related to the local gas types and quality.

As for me, if I am averaging 21+, I am getting what Mazda advertised as the MPG for the vehicle... and having fun.

I have 2800 miles on mine - I use 87, 89, or 91 octane and have the most recent flash. I tend to get about 18 mpg in mixed 70/30 (city/hwy) driving. The last long trip with all highway miles was before the M flash, so my all highway number should go up. ( I think the tanks at all highway were ~21 mpg). I seem to shift before 7000 rpm (mostly). Shifting to 5th for crusing in town (~40-45 mph) seems to keep the gas consumption down, but what fun is there in that? Life is too short to drive boring cars!...

If I drive all city driving I get 13 mpg. With all highway driving I get 24 mpg. My light typically comes on a 240 miles.

Since the M flash, my yellow light comes now on around 290 miles, no matter whether I drive 60 or 80 mph.
I do not "cruise at 6000 rpm" as I suspect some others here are doing it.

Got around 200 per tank on mine no matter what style of driving or grade of gas. Best tank was 240 with 100% highway driving (cruise set at 65).

MPG issue was one of the reasons I no longer have the 8.

Bet that 15.3 gallons caused you a shiny penny. I have to go every half tank to make me feel better about spending the money on gas eventhugh it all comes from the same monthly budget.

I get about 180-190 mi out of a tank. Have not yet gotten the M flash, but don't think it's gonna do much for fuel economy.
