I get about 150 glorious miles (consitently- city driving) before my gas light comes on- so I'm guessing about 180 max.....

But someone else (maybe a Mazda employee) will soon be driving my wonderful guzzler.

190 miles today and the light went on.

I have a 20 mile drive to the dealer, hopefully I'll make it to turn it in today.

I am in total shock at the mileage that everyone is reporting with their cars! I am lucky if I get 180 out of a tank, but then again I refuse to drive a sports car like a granny either. Whats the use in having it if your gonna drive it like its a Chevy Lumina. Get out there and start driving your car the way it was intended to be driven.

I'm trying to figure out why I only get 12 mpg ( If I'm lucky ). 3500 miles on the 8.

I have tried shifting at 3500 RPM, and driving modest. You can only drive so fast in the suburbs of Atlanta. Maybe it's all the stop and go traffic. I need to get out and take a road trip to see if my car is capable of being more efficient.

I'm having to come to the relization that I'll be spending $4000/year on gasoline. I still love to drive my car, it's just that I frequent the gas station much more often.

My low-gas light usually comes on around 200-220 miles into the tank. I've had it come on at 250 after a cruise from San Diego to Burbank and back in off hours with no traffic (cruise control on most of the way, but getting up to 95 or so around San Onofre/Pendleton etc)

The worst tank I had was after some very hard twisty driving where I was in 2nd gear most of the time at 6k+ RPMs (the same run I discovered the rev-limiter) - in that case I got under 200 miles on the tank.

I'd say my typical tankfull takes me 230 miles.

Simon.

roachman, what do those miles represent? When the light comes on, when you have to fill it, both?

Gallons are really needed to get the whole story. I think 15.3 gallons is max. per tankful, so, knowing your mpg (example = 18);

18mpg x 15.3gal = 275 miles per tankful (est.)

You can add more miles past when the light comes on. The light just tells you that it's time to start thinking about getting gas soon.

Good questions...
Those miles are when I filled up the tank. The light came on earlier.

The times I went over 200 miles, I was really scared and I put 14.5 gallons in...

Most of the time I was putting in 13.8 -13.5 gallons...

Oh yea... I guess from this it is obvious I got pretty crappy MPG... around 14mpg..

This plus the heat the engine put into the cabin and my garage are the main reasons I am sending it back..

It breaks my heart, since I put money down in Oct 2002 and sat on this forum everynight for 8 months....

hmm... I always fill up at half tank (its cheaper that way) at about 140-150 miles, my daily trip is about 5 miles country roads, 3 miles super speedway, and 3 miles city.

... on a road trip I got 23mpg with sitting in a dead stop traffic jam for almost an hour, 15.3 gallons would put me at 350 miles:p

one thing ive noticed about this car is that it accelerates so effortlessly, it is easy to accel A LOT faster than really necessary. you can skip shift 1-3-5 at 2800 rpm and it drives just fine. dip into the go pedal and it is designed to eat gas

i know my 94 probe GT would get 30+mpg in steady driving, 22 in aggressive commute driving, and 8mpg on the track. so it really can vary.

Even if I manage to get 20 MPG (imperial) from my RX8 I'm still looking at approx $8,400 a year on petrol!

Seems like I'm going to get lighter shoes if I'm to avoid putting petrol in every day.

Cool GassMan......

My fill light comes on at 390/400 kms (250 miles) and the fill is almost exactly 50 litres. Mostly highway at 70/75 mph.

So, roughly almost 23mpg.

I think Ophitoxaemia has hit upon a very important point. I too have noticed that I tend to accelerate much more, even in city traffic, than I used to because the acceleration is so smooth and the car is quiet. So much so that I really have to concentrate not to do this.

Perhaps some of the people who are experiencing lower gas mileage than others aren't suffering because of the quirks of their particular cars--which is what some posters have assumed--but because they are--like me--more susceptible to the tempation.

351 miles!!!
are you sure?

351 miles in 61L tank
that's mean the fuel consumption is around 10.8L/100km!!!
the offical number from mazda is around 12.6L/100km.
That's the number you'll get if your shift under 3000rpm

I'm absolutely positive. But remember that one tank was almost 100% interstate/highway driving at around 70-80 mph using lots of cruise control.

A 330 mile tank is more the norm for me, and I DO NOT shift at 3000 rpm except right after I start the car cold in the morning. I usually shift around 5000-6000 rpm.

I don't have any idea if the make order has anything to do with mpg, but can't hurt if you post your VIN's at ptiemann's thread to see if a correlation exists:

https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-discussion-3/lets-compare-vin-numbers-fuel-economy-12965/

The low mpg, interior cabin heat, and A/C issues really have me wondering if I'll be happy with the 8 beyond a year or two. I might be more forgiving of the heat/AC issues as we get into the fall/winter months, but the MPG issue is definitely cause for concern. I'd be kicking myself if I happen to get a < 17 mpg on the highway unit.

Luckily, I don't concern myself about it, yet I do agree my starts are much more spirited with the RX-8. I go to redline at least once each drive.

Well, I decide to follow the advice of Mikeb's No Fear shirt, Drivr It Like You Stole It...

171 miles with 9 miles with the light on. 91 octane.

It was worth it .....
