Mine is an 04, engine was replaced under warranty at 19k. Right now it has 49k so approximately 30k on the new engine and counting. Hoping for a lot more than that...

 

Kinda scary, I'm still going on my first engine. I just flooded it to 2nd time in 10 years .

I have 28K miles on my original engine, which averages to 7K per year. It doesn't get driven very much, but I enjoy the hell out of every mile.

 

2004 manual transmission. Dec 2003 build. Oct 2004 purchased new. Started premix at 30k miles. Never flooded. Average 9,000 miles a year. About a dozen track days total

Failed compression test at 84,000 miles (was having starting issues), Replaced just shy of 85,000.

Now at 92,000 miles

 

My engine failed at about 75,000 miles. Fortunately, replaced under warranty plus CAT and runs great now.

35k miles on my '06.. failed a compression test last week. Just below the minimum, though.
I know someone with an '04, that has 140k and still passes compression.
Then someone else with an '04 at 95k, bad compression but hanging in there.

Wonder what percentage of all RX-8 owners have posted on this website. As compared to what percentage of RX-8 owners with engine problems have posted. We'll never know, but if I had to guess, I'd say 3-5% of all owners, and 25-40% of owners with engine problems.

 

I feel like a lot of the problems are isolated to 04/05 but those are the most popular years...

Hi guys, my 2005 has 106K miles on original engine, passed compression test last week, so threw a little money at it with a new clutch, motor mounts and new rear struts, rotors, brakes, diff fluid and a basic tune up. starts every time, cold, hot, warm on original starter which is weak.

 

my 2004 is still on its original engine just gone over 150,000kms the other day.Still feels nice and strong.

 

As someone who recently bought a 2009 with 27k, I hope you're right. Granted I didn't buy it expecting the reliability of a Toyota Corolla, but I'm hoping to get at least 100k out of the thing.

 

Nice to see some higher miles still kicking around. Do you drive those like you stole 'em or baby them? I kept hearing people say; "drive it hard or it won't last you" and "if you baby it, don't expect much life from it" when I bought mine. Wonder how true that is...

05 with 96k on my first engine and I fear my its time is coming to an end sometime this year. :s

Already had to get new sway bar end links, new ignition, new cat/midpipe, and a lady just hit my car and I have a $700 deductible I won't be getting back. Part-time student in college, and my wallet is hurting.

 

I drove my 2006 Shinka (copper red - best color ever!) for fun and made sure to red-line it on occasion but still had my engine fail at 80k. Thank god for that Mazda extended warranty! Replaced engine for free and also my cat convertor. My mazda tech said he had never seen an RX-8 go past 100K without a new engine so I don't think how you drive has much bearing - might as well have fun with 'em!

 

I have an 2004 rx8 bone stock.I have 96,000 plus and it's running same as always.I will break the 100,000 mile club shortly. I use systhetic oil and i pre mix approx 200-to 1 mix.

 

2006 with 43k miles original engines. No major issues so far. I'm on my third set of ignition coils; original ones went bad at 20k and second set 42k couple of months ago. Also on my third battery. Coolant reservoir changed due to faulty sensor. The red led display on the center console went bat **** crazy back in 2008, looked like a really bad random visual eq, it was replaced under warranty. Blown rear passenger shock.

My 2007 is at 196,000 miles, and still runs pretty good, and just recently passed smog. These are mostly highway miles, since i have a long work commute, and have driven her all over California, Vegas, and Mexico on a regular basis. I change the oil every 3k, and have done all the maintenance, including changing all the fluids, trans and diff with synthetic, and she also has BHR coils. The dealer always comment that they have never seen so many miles on an original rotary, so that's scary, but also makes me feel good that mine has. She's not as strong as new, but still runs very good
