it simulates the hp and tourque going to the wheels at certain rpms, but running the car on a dyno leaves out wind resistance. And that force becomes huge at higher speeds.

You're the bonehead. Riding a single car-length behind a motorcyclist at highway speeds is totally irresponsible. You were essentially threatening to kill the guy. It's too bad he didn't follow you home and beat the crap out of you.

It's jerks like you who make riding a bike so dangerous.

Yea but the cars top speed doesn't change wether there's wind resistance or not....if the ECU limits the engine at a certain speed than it shouldn't change. I think it would affect the speed in which you get to those speeds if anything.

i did 150mph and 188mph yesterday.........on the dyno

I have also gone 152mph in the car stock, and 148mph in the car with the oem mazdaspeed body kit on it. Both times the car had a full tank of gas and 1 passenger (who consented to the high speed run) it was on a closed section of road about 5 miles long. Both runs were in 5th gear, ~70*F temps.

Also They were both done just by going WOT in 5th gear from about 70mph.

partly true :

On a dynojet all you are doing is spining a large, heavy drum, the dyno measures how much HP the car is putting out by how fast it can accelerate the drum. It then takes the HP figures and uses the RPM to figure out the TQ.

On a mustang dyno you are spining a smaller drum that has an eddy current fighting against it, this drag is not constant like the dynojet, the faster the drums spin, the more force is put against the car, this is the reason why the mustangdyno usualy reads lower than a dynojet...

The way the mustang dyno works, it simulates your car driving down the road, so as the speed of the drums builds, it factors in air resistance......since it doesnt know the drag of each car, its just an average formula that is applied, but its pretty close.

I would say a speed you can hit on a mustang dyno is within 10mph (on average) of what you could really do.

Bottom line the rx8 should be able to hit about 140-150mph on the street (given a straight, level road and enough distance)

I've only taken my red one (or as I call it the radar Bull's Eye) about 93 or so but I did wind out the 6sp MT Silver demo to... well... lets just say... it was signifigantly more. I give you a hint, I was shifting at 8k rpms at every gear and I was well into 6th before I realize my foot was actually allowed to release the accelerator.

I was able to go 130mph in my Ford Focus wagon. In the 8, add 30mph more. And btw, It was in the original tires.... and it started raining during the few mile runs. Didnt get any tire slip, but I did slow down cause..... well you know.... its illegal to drive when its wet.

142mph. 1 passenger practically in my lap so she could see the speedo telling me to go faster. (she's nuts) half a tank of gas. WOT with 9k shifts 3 and 4 and then when I hit 142 I was in 5th at about 7500 - 8000 RPMS. 2am on a freshly paved highway. Never do it again.

So far I got my RX to 130 mph, but I am going on a road trip to cali so I will top that for sure. I feel comfortable at high speeds, I'm only 26 but I fly to Europe every year and drove quite a bit on the autobahn. I toppped out a rented 4 cyl Ford Mondeo at 235 km= 147 mph, my friend in Germany said they have different gearing because of the autobahn. I also drove my friends new BMW 530d at 250 km= 156 mph(hit the limiter), and my uncles s2000 to 255 km(was still pulling but barely). The autobahn is a drivers dream, people pay attention to the road and other drivers, it's so organized butwhen you come back to the States you just want to pull out a gun and shoot all the stupid drivers on the road.

Stay away from the big cities, I got stuck in a 2 hour traffic jam going into Hamburg.

Ok, ok....

I've gone 140 mph and I think it might have been able to go faster.

But, the "cooler heads" are right, unless your crazy like me its way better to do this on a track. If you have a wife and family, than forget it and do this on the track. If you have any common sense, than do this on the track.

If you don't give a f*ck about your own life or just an outright crazy nut, than feel free to test the RX-8's upper speed limit. Which, is scary. The RX-8 may not be the fastest kid from 0-60, but it can get up there with its top speed. But, driving around 140 mph, 150 mph, or the lord help you on the highway is enough to make your ***** shrink... maybe permentently if you make a mistake.

141 mph , stretch between lakeland and hain city Fl, 6 am in the morning. One thing i notice ,the pull after a 100 in the 8 is pretty steady unlike some cars that run out of steam after 125. My old 93 Prelude Si could hit 145, but after 125 , it took forever and a day to reach that speed.

Tend to run out of road before I run out of car - got to find a longer road! Can see a visit to Canada or that rocket test range out in New Mexico....

They safest way to get your 8 to 150mph is to drive 10 feet behind a semi going that fast to get inside it's drag. Not only do you save gas, but since you have much less air resistance behind a semi, you might be able to pass 150mph.
