My track car has a rollbar, 5-point harness and racing shell. I wear a helmet and protective clothing. The car has an extinguisher system. I do not want or plan to die in my car as too many people depend on me.

Couple of jackasses were racing on Long Island a few years ago. The surviving driver is now in jail on manslaughter charges. You don't get to drive in jail.

My advice, try autocross to learn skills and then find some track time thru SCCA or some other club, then check out your top speed.

Ha... I do over 130 on country roads on my average day. Best way to travel.

I made 144 on a late-night run down Ohio 113. My friend tried to snap a picture but screwed it up. I felt like it still had more left in her.

we all really don't know how fast we have gone.

you guys won't trust me on this one, but the speedo is not accurate at that speed.... i bet at the 120mph mark the car is 10-20 mph off....
just thought you might all want to know....

I was traveling down the interstate on my way home from college and hit about 120 while going downhill. There were no cars for a couple miles. The speedo was still climbing really fast when I hit the brakes. Got kinda scared because the car felt like it was starting to lift due to the wind I was driving into. If it wasn't for that I would've probably made it to around 140.

I usually don't like driving above 100mph, not that 100mph isn't dangerous, but going over that is a little crazy unless you're on a track.

I hit 130 in 5th with sunroof open and windows down. Will break my previous record of 140 that I set with my NA RX7 FC a few years back. My POV, your only crazy doing this if you suck at driving, nuff said.

So you're saying when the speedometer says we're doing 120, it might actually be doing 100? I believe the speedometer may be off slightly... but no way near that amount off.

Hey, here's an idea: if you think driving fast is a moral failing, then don't read the topic. Tell you what, maybe there's a baseball game on, if you're feeling sleepy. Perhaps you'd be less cranky after a little nap... ok pumpkin?

142, Arizona highway between Flagstaff and Phoenix (emptiest, flattest road ever). I let off the gas at about 5500 rpm because I started thinking about the 115 degree heat and what the pressure of my tires may or may not be. At that rate of acceleration, I would say I could have hit 150.

assess the risk of accident:

speeding on roads with high/moderate traffic, hills, wildlife signs,
bad weather = high risk of accident

speeding on flat roads, low-0 traffic, little/no vegetation(wildlife), clear weather, checking tires, road before hand = moderate risk of accident

Bottom line: No matter what you do the risk will never be low

He meant when you are doing 120, you are actually doing 140

Which means that when you do 155, you are actually doing 175.

I hit 90+ mph on a daily basis... on the section of I-95 in Miami that I travel on no one is doing anything below 70, so 90 isnt really exhibition of speed on that road... I have however taken it up to 128 mph on the same section, at 4am, with a V1 on board and clear roads all around. It almost scary how solidly planted the 8 feels at super-100mph speeds.

Speeds:
127 mph- 1983 Porsche 944 (what a fun car that one was!)
130 mph- 2004 Jetta GLI (don't show that to my wife) there's far more pedal and turbo left, I didn't WANT to go any faster.
144 mph- 2003 Mustang GT with a GIANT Cobra R rear wing (that sucker makes DOWNFORCE, but really drags the car's top speed down!) topped out
145 mph- 1991 Kawasaki ZX-6E (and they say the new 600s are FAR faster!)

At 127 in the 944, the wind was trying to pull the sunroof off the car! At 130 in the Jetta, the engine just wanted to go faster. At 144 in the Mustang GT I was topped out aerodynamically like a brick with a wing on the back (stable in flight, but not very pretty). At 145 on the ZX-6 Ninja, my head felt like a bobble-head inside the helmet, and the damn bike wanted to go faster! I backed out before crossing the railroad tracks at the end of the 2 mile run as I didn't know what the bike would do crossing them at that speed. All flat roads, no traffic, late late late night runs. None done recently as I now have a baby daughter and would like to live to see her reach college. Might change my mind about that when she starts dating. Might not want to live much longer after all!

There is NO safe place to do these speeds. Not on a deserted road in the middle of the desert, not on the banking of the California Speedway. A NASCAR drive will have a tire go flat at 190 and will wreck into the wall on a straightaway. Do you think you're better than they are? We drive fast because we like to drive fast.

At 120, my Mustang feels slow because the suspension is heavily modified. It's like everything happens in slow motion, and it's extremely controllable. It used to feel unmanagable at 80! At 130 the Jetta GLI picks up some aero-lift and begins to feel light on its factory sport suspension (which unlike the RX-8s, actually IS lower than the other Jettas). The factory dampners also begin to show how soft they are. In the RX-8, and I've driven several different models/years/mileages, the dampners are the same, or softer than my wife's Jetta GLI. At 140 in one of those, I could certainly see the front end being extremely light and "floaty". That said, however, simply changing the shocks from standard to sport Bilsteins might cure this. The Porsche 944, which I said was "very fun" had Bilsteins, agressive sport springs, low-profile 16" tires (hey, that was big once!) and was easily in the top two of all of the cars I've owned (the list also includes a 1973 240Z which would run 110 constantly on twisty KY backroads!). 147 HP and just 200 ft/lbs of torque, but still, nonetheless, one of the best cars ever.

If an RX-8 handles that well (and the ones I've driven certainly have on short drives) once it's been suitably modified for ride height (must sit lower), shock valving to suit my tastes, and stiffer hollow anti-sway bars, it'll likely hold the top spot in my personal pantheon of pleasureable vehicles.
