How do you guys redline your Rx8

Supposedly, high RPMs with low intake pressure can cause premature wearing of the apex seals. (no idea why.) Better to redline it with the throttle fully-open.

redlining
Before you think about redlining your baby, make sure you follow the protocall for breaking it in according to warranty, make sure it's healthy. Rotary engines don't appreciate being babied, the people having problems with them are the ones who drive theirs too conservatively. It should be run up to redline at least once a week, maybe 1x/day, after it;'s warmed up, don't do it cold. Accelerate hard in 1st or2nd, you'll be going 100+ in no time flat, and shift quickly into next gear when you hear the whine of your baby at redline, 9000rpm. Having a good radar detector or laser jammer would be advisable, and make sure you have alot of road in front of you. It will take your breath away. Enjoy!

I do a full throttle run up in 2nd or 3rd when possible. Trying to avoid ripping it in first to save the trans, plus it's not super practical.. run out of gear too fast. The idea is not just to turn the motor at x speed, the rpm's do nothing, it's to run up the combustion temperatures and pressures to highest possible where the carbon actually burns off, and the only way to do that is full throttle in gear for an extended period.

I still have so much to learn... all this time I've only been redlining 1st and 2nd.
One of my fave moments: On the track at Englishtown with the instructor turning to me and saying after the second redlining: "You're awfully rough on your car."
Ahh, makes me smile every time

I think redling consistently is over-rated. Just check through the "new engine club" threads for details. First, I'm sure many people are doing it without fully warming the engine and it's hard to determine that condition without an oil temperature gauge. It takes approximately forever to get the oil warm idling in the driveway, about 20-30 minutes putting around town and 10-20 minutes on the highway. Second, it's not really necessary. What's needed is to run in a condition where all the ports are open which happens around 7200 rpm. Lastly, the oil pressure in the Series I motor is marginal, being the lowest of any of the Mazda rotaries. (This was fixed in the 09-10 Series II engines or you can fix it yourself with Mazmart's oil pressure mod.)

As HiFlite999 mentioned about the oil, I usually and obviously warm mine up before anything. I will only redline it once I've been driving it for a while so the oil is at temp. I usually drive on the highway when I go do stuff so anytime after that I'm comfortable with. Otherwise if I take a short drive in my town (no highway) then I won't redline it. And just because people say a "red line a day will keep the carbon away" doesn't mean you need to redline the **** out of your motor constantly. Oh and I try to stay away from first gear redlining to keep it easy on the trans., 2nd and 3rd are the best. 4th if you got enough clear road......

No beep.
Methanol clears the carbon.
I miss the beep...
hmmm, now it must be in the flash somewhere.

I finally had the opportunity to get my R3 out on the track a couple weekends ago. Because I was focussed on learning the line (20 corners needing plenty of memorizing), I just left the car in third gear all day (7 sessions of 30 mins each). On the 4 straights, I accelerated with the pedal mashed to the floor until reaching redline and then, depending on the length of the straight, either held it at redline for a few seconds until starting to brake or by the time it reached redline I had to get on the brakes right away. The pattern was the same all day - redlining 4 times per lap, approximately 60 times per session for 7 sessions. By the end of the day the car sounded just as happy as it had at the start of the day and I had only used 3/5 of a liter of oil. I did manage to drain most of the tank of gas covering only 180 kms, but it sure was fun.

I like the on-ramp. Accelerate from the light. Redline 1st, 2nd, fast corner accelerating closing on 3rd gear redline... then slow down to merge with traffic...

find empty parking lot, put tranny in second gear, turn steering wheel all the way to the left, mash on far right pedal, wait for beep, remove foot from far left pedal, stop when you can no longer see

I redline it any way I can! Revving, flooring it, spinning my tires.
Rev it at stop lights to get people to stop talking on their phones and start moving.
Rev it at the drive thru cause I love the acoustics.
Rev it in my driveway so my Mom knows I'm home.
Floor it going on the on-ramp and blast past any grannies traveling at a deadly low speed.
Floor it from stoplights until I reach 40mph.
Floor it on the freeway in 4th gear at 3:00 in the morning (when NO ONE is around).
Spin my tires while taking a sharp turn and stomping on the throttle.
Spin my tires next to mustang owners to embarrass them in front of their girlfriends.
And spinning my tires from a stop in the rain (really dangerous, but really fun. Check your surroundings!)
Anyway you do it, have fun, be safe, and make noise!
