How do you guys redline your Rx8
 

I generally do it in 2nd gear, but with the gas only depressed halfway down.. still takes a lot of clear road in the front to reach redline. (Im scared of flooring my car, its only 2 weeks old :( with 1800km on it, i commute a lot)

So how do u guys go about doing it? =)

you wont flood it by redlining it. redlining it is actually great for the engine, so dont be scared of it. Most of us readline just by accelerating at WOT and shifting when it beeps. I usually make a point of 1, 2 ,3 redline at the very least once a week, usually pulling onto a highway so that im not actually speeding that much. I also redline in first or second now and again on most longish drives through the week. that being said, your engine isnt really even broken in completely yet by some peoples standards. I would change the oil at 2000km then drive it nice for a little bit more and then make her beep. rotaries dont like to be babied.

I have a technical process I go through.

Put car in first gear
Release clutch
Push the peddle on the right all the way down
Wait for beep
Change gears

Repeat.

It's a sports car...drive it like one

1,2,3rd gear.... and enter freeways redlining 3rd so you can catch up fast...

I can't drive a 15 minute trip without redlining it atleast once or twice :S

obsel, the point here is to get the engine burning really hot and blowing out any carbon that has built up or keeping any carbon from building up to begin with, not just to excerise the tach. I forgot to mentino your car should be at full operating temperature before doing this and also, dont feel bad. the motor will thank you in the long run, and like posted above, its a sports car. have some fun with it...legally.

On my back-road 'mountain' commute, there's at least 4 or 5 places that I redline it in 1st and 2nd after the engine is fully warmed up. Depending on my route, maybe a couple more. There's one particular back-road intersection, where I have to fit into a constant flow of heavier traffic on a more heavily travelled but still 2-lane road. i go up to 6th down shift into 3rd, match the rpm and let out the clutch.

oh....i was on three hours of sleep when i posted that. haha.

There is highway right in back of my house, you get the point :)

check what is in front of you
mash gas pedal
when you hear a faint 'beep' it is time to shift.

Works in any gear, but 1st and 2nd seem to be the safest considering our speed limits in this town

I only redline in 6th gear. The centrifugal forces are too great otherwise.

2nd gear for me, Most of the time its on a freeway on ramp, and some of the time its an empty road leading from my house onto the main road.

I'm not going to pretend I've got a long history with rotary engines - my 09 R3 just turned over 20,000 kilometers. But I've got plenty of experience with sports cars and I've never been shy to red-line an engine. I don't red-line the RX-8 every time I shift, but there are a number of times each day, just in the course of my commute to and from work, where the road, traffic conditions and speed limit permit me to wait for the beep in both 1st and 2nd gear.

I have on one occasion enjoyed taking the car to the red-line in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th gear... and was doing my best to achieve the same in 6th when circumstances forced me to back off. It hit 137 mph and was running smooth as silk...

So, I can't attest to the technical reasons for red-lining and how it will benefit the engine. But Mazda did not build a sports car with a 9000 rpm red-line and then expect folks to drive at around at a maximum of 3500 rpm. Drive it like it was designed to be driven, when the circumstances permit. Maybe that only means hearing the beep in 1st and 2nd, but you can at least enjoy that much (and you will enjoy it!).

Work is maybe 7 minutes from my house at best, so my car is barely warmed up by the time I get there. I usually push in the clutch and mash it once of twice though. I've been easy on my car the past few days until I swap out plugs, but after that it's going to beep like a pager ;)

2 weeks old and 1800km. I would wait until your do your first oil change until you redline it. Make sure it's properly broken in first.

04 mt rx8, i drive around 700kms a week, redline for atleast 10 secs every day whether its gear 1 2 or 3, sometimes all 5 lol.

While in gear and moving i put my right hoof on the floor... seems to do the job pretty well

I like to redline in reverse backing out of the garage on my way to the liquor store

I usually drive 2nd onto freeways. It's like ZOOOOOMx2

Step 1. turn car on and let warm up before aggressive driving =]

step 2. get into car and buckle up (click it or ticket)

step 3. take your vehicle to a safe place to perform WOT run

step 4. press on the accelerator until you hear a beep!

step 5. release gas quickly shift into next gear and perform step 4 again

that is all

There's no point in redlining if your foot doesn't have the pedal to the ground. To effectively burn the carbon out of the engine you have to floor the car from like 4K all the way to redline; don't just press the pedal halfway, you're not accomplishing anything except burning fuel.
