How to buy an Rx-8

Hi guys,

I come from the rx7club forum and recently will be looking into an Rx-8 for the girlfriend. I am wondering if there are general things to look for when picking up a used 8. I know everything that needs checking on the 7 but an clueless on the 8.

It is her first car so I will be looking for an automatic. The FD auto tranny was really well made is the 8 tranny the same case?

Thanks for the help

nice 7. i love the enkeis.

get a 06 and up AT. it uses the 6AT. the 04 and 05 had a 4AT. also, the 04 and 05 had a 4 port engine, whereas the later ones have a 6 port engine.

i'd stay away from 04s, just because they are the ones that tended to have problems. im sure you could find a nice 04, and if the seller has all the maintenance slips with no major problems. i dont see a problem with that. but.. personally, i'd stick with 06 and up.

She is buying the car herself.

Originally she wanted a C6 Z06, but I convinced her that she would be dead within a week.

Thanks for all the tips.

How has the condition of the interior on GT's done so far? My friend has one but he rarely drives it, I am wondering how it holds up under some real usage.

I am actually trying to sell the Enkeis they look alot better on the 8 than the 7 I find.

Sorry for bumping my own thread back from the dead but after being patient for a long time I have been able to convince her to go manual.

Can you guys provide any comments on the OEM Navigation System? As well as the quality of the tan GT interior?

The leather on the 8 is about the same quality as the leather on the 7 -- not really great, and definitely doesn't hold up as well as cloth.

I owned an FD and looked at many before I bought one. Now I'm looking for an 8 and in the cars I see, it seems about the same to me.

OEM Navagation is junk.

Use mink oil on the leather.

lol you guys think I was trolling?

this guy just said RX-8s are for girls and reinforced that with a stunning picture of an rx-7. Then asked if the FD chassis was better than the RX-8s.. god you guys are slow.

Not so obvious troll is a troll.

Yeah, it isn't top of the line leather or anything, and I would have gone cloth if heated cloth seats was an option. My heated seats are my favorite creature comfort up here in new england

The cloth interior is actually nicer than the leather, IMHO. Go have a look at an 8 with the cloth interior, it's pretty nice. And it should wear better than the leather.

The factory GPS nav is nice in that it's built into the dash with the nice pop-up thing. But that's the only nice thing about it as far as I can tell, stand-alone GPS navs seem to be a lot better. Also, some of the older models can no longer get updated disks, and you can't just take it into the house and download updates on a computer like you can with a stand-alone unit.

I didn't go for the GT because I didn't want the extra weight, and the leather and GPS were not what I wanted at all. But why not just have your GF look at both trims and see which she likes best? Her reaction would matter a lot more than anything you'll read here.

And...nice 7. Too bad it isn't black though :P

Don't understand anything you said and what you are saying doesn't reflect anything I can see that has been said in this thread.

She is terrible with directions and I don't want to have my car broken into just to get a 250$ Garmin, I don't exactly live in the nicest area of my city.

I find BB FD's look ordinary, white, IBM, CYM and red are the nicest I think.

A standard C6 would be a good choice.

Here's mine.....

I find it predictable with the automatic as long as the traction control on.
