hitting redline

Although 09Factor's testimony does give me a little more confidence with his RX-8 having seen some miles.
In fact there are two engines built in Hiroshima:
High Power: accompanies the 6sp manual and is the same all over the world
Standard Power: Accompanies the 5sp manual in most of the world and the Automatic in select parts of the world (US is one of them)
There are many differences between the engines...most notable is the lack of Tertiary ports on the Standard Power model. The tertiary ports on the 6sp High Power model open and with many other factors allows the 6sp to power its way up the RPM band over 9K...6sp High Power owners can feel the change when the Tertiary ports open.
If you want more info I'll try to find you the link to an 80meg file with almost every aspect of our engine covered in varying levels of skill needed to understand it...the difference between the High and Standard power engine is explained thoroughly...but what you really understand is how advanced our engine is, really it is AMAZING and it is clear why the 8's rotary engine won engine of the year 3 times now I believe (or is it twice)
These differences are central to the problem of Forced Induction kits on the Standard power model

Rev as you please, me happy
Following up on my last post. I am saying that it is not likely you will hurt the engine driving/shifting at high revs - actually 4/4 race rotary's can do 14K. Don't know about the AT, never had one, but I can say the MT is good, however, you may wear out the clutch if you slip it at high RPMs. From my experience with RX's starting in 1980 with a new 1979 (had 5 total), engines tend to fail gradually at about 130- 150K miles due to apex seal failure (terminal). Driving hard doesn't really seem to be a factor with this.
BTW, I would get +450 miles out of a tank of gas in my 1991 going at about 90 MPH from LA to Phoenix (that's about 28 MPG). But, that car was not as fast as 8, and only rated at 160 BHP.

I think I know what you mean Rowdy. When you hit 7500 rpms, the car get this weird feeling, like it's trying extra hard. You can feel it slightly and barely hear, but the engine keeps going. Very strange. I was in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears when it did it.

I have 1,300 miles on my V. Red RX-8. It's been coddled and broken in according to the best information I can find. Coming from a motorcycle background I know that driving around without giving it the coals occasionally doesn't help you break in the motor, so I made occasional trips to 6,500-7,000 rpm. Just enough to whet my appetite and give me a sense of longing to go higher.
Well, yesterday I'm sitting in an inside lane on a 3 lane highway, at a rare traffic light on the road. I'm beside a Mustang GT. The inside lane ends a 1/4 mile up the road so I wanted to pull out and around the Mustang. No other intention was on my mind. The light turned green and I pulled away smartly - nothing racy just a defined maneuver. I ****** a clearing look to the left and the Mustang is right there. I step on it a little; I'm in second gear. Damn, what's this guy doing? The end of the lane isn't far ahead.
Now I'm committed, I nail it and the rush is on. My eyes focused and the sound of the rotary becomes my mistress. I look over and I'm edging ahead - this isn't going to be easy. I glance at the tach, 8,000 and climbing. I ****** 3rd gear and the car settles and gets serious. This time, no prancing, no delicacy, no consideration; I floor it. In an instant I'm at 8,500 and the Mustang is falling away. As I hit 4th gear I'm a car length ahead and signaling for the next lane.
I slip in and ease off the power while letting my speed decrease to the 70mph speed limit. Later, a few miles down the road I turn off: but just as I do the silver Mustang cruised by. The driver, a mid-forties kind of guy like me, looks my way and we exchange a smile.
This morning when I cranked the Rotary over to take me to work, it seemed like it started easier - really! Maybe it was my over-active imagination, maybe she was more willing now, maybe she was ready to say yes again...

If your worried about the ATX's longevity, just add a auxilary transmission cooler. Its only about a 50 dollar modification, and will greatly extend the life of the unit, while providing more consistent shifts. I'm surprised there isn't a sticky on it, as most performance cars with ATX's consider it one of the first CRITICAL mods to perform....especially if there is any reason to believe it may be overheating, or under stress beyond what it may be designed for.

AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
heheh, ya i'll shout out to that! I'm at the damn gas station every other day! And I barely get 300km/tank, but damn is it so fun revving it up that high. Doesn't feel like your going that fast, but when i look in the rear view mirror the cars are sooo far away from me.. I redline at least once every 2 days in 2nd gear at least

that shuddering is your scared *** taking off in a rotary powered rocket ship! :D
