I honestly believe I will keep my 8 for at least 10 years.

With the motor warranty extension to 8 years/100k miles, and the rarity of the car, plus what's been very good reliability for me, I have every reason to believe I got a good one.

It's very rare to get a car that's produced in such low numbers, but is comfortable enough and reliable enough to be used as a daily driver, year round, that is so enjoyable to drive.

At some point, I may consider doing something to add a layer of protection against oxidation, because of Michigan and the salt in the winter, etc., but to date, the only methods I've seen advertised either don't work, or actually make the situation worse (like Ziebarting).

I believe the thread is the highest mileage rx-8. I'm not sure why people with fresh new cars , or "undropped *****", if you will, are posting. I only have 71,000 miles, and am quickly adding onto it, but I still consider it somewhat young. After the warranty extension, I have faith that Mazda has built a car that will last for at least 200,000 miles, with proper maintenance and some part replacements here and there. But it still bums me out sometimes putting miles on it so quickly.

Local one for sale here has 166k. Not sure if it's the original engine but shouldn't be too hard to verify.

Highest I've seen to date.

I was going to buy one with with 196k miles on it for 4,500$ stock motor as a project. It didn't start, then the guy finally got it to start after like a 8min crank... once it fired he replaced his add and jacked the price up 2k listing it as "car does not drive because bad clutch".
Some idiot bought it lol.

Lol, I guess I'm the idiot.

I had 2 rotorhead friends check it out for me. They shot video with their camera phone for me. It fired right up, and you could tell that something was going on with either the clutch or trans.

Oh, and I paid nowhere near the asking price.

Oh, and another friend is the Mazda rotary tech at the local dealer, and it going to check it out once it gets here. If there is something internally wrong with the engine, I get $1000 back.

But what do I know, I am a rotary noob.

There's a forum member that traded his RX8 with 180,000 miles on it. The thread is somewhere... Somewhere...

Just picked up a spare engine and trans just in case there is something wrong.

Got a clutch from work (Exedy) just in case that is all it is. And ordered a new clutch pedal assembly as well.

Collecting all this before it arrives just to have it around. If it doesn't need any of it, I have it for when something does go awry.

I kind of hope the engine is bad. I enjoy doing the hard work, and slack on the easy stuff!
