Now go get that 150,000 mile screenshot for us

I don't suggest a compression check unless you really really want to know. I would just run the engine to the ground. Ain't going to matter much till you really need to replace it at that mileage. My 2cp. You running premix btw?

It was only a thought, but, you're right. I haven't changed the rate of OMP injection, still use 5W20 as Mazda recommends, and premix with 10-15ml/gallon of TC-W3 2 cycle oil; which I started at 141,000 miles last November.

^Awesome results.

What are your driving habits? Mostly freeway? Do you like to exercise the engine on a regular basis? Do any track events, autocross, back-roads driving?

Thank you. It's first 120,000 miles were all driven on the freeway. Lately, my daily drives have only been in the city then drive it "Wide-Open-Throttle" in the freeway twice a week on my way home from work. I've never tracked the car, but I've always grip-driven in winding roads of Mulholland Drive.

Everything in the car are still its original 2004 parts. Besides those that involves routine maintenance; I've only fixed the sun visors, replaced the radiator, the clutch bracket, clutch, pressure plate, and the throw-out bearing of the car.

Thanks for the reply.

If the dealer hasn't replaced the motor mounts & starter, you should look into having those done.

I just replaced my original motor mounts and the right side was completely broken into two pieces (known issue on the 2004s). The car idles much better now.

And, as you probably know, the newer starters spin faster and help tired, older engines start easier.

Out of curiosity, Have you ever had your engine de-carboned?

128,600 miles and my car wouldn't start Sunday night. Got it towed into the stealer, I mean, dealer....compression and rpm ratio ratings are at half of satisfactory levels. Ordered the new engine Monday. Wouldn't you know it....renesis motors are on back order. May be three weeks or more. Will probably need new coil packs with it. Looking at about $4500 fixed out the door. Yay! Rest of my car is like brand new.....so I'll have a brand new car so to speak when this is done with still no car payment. Hurry up and let's get this done!

Do you have that in writing? 100% NEW engine, NO parts reused from other shot engines?

After looking through the receipts, the previous owner replaced the right mount on June of 2006. I'll probably check that this summer. In addition to parts that were replaced, the Cat-Converter was replaced on January of 2008, the starter's been weak since November and there aren't any record of the previous owner changing it. I haven't used any engine cleaner to decarbonize since I've had the car almost two years ago, likewise, the previous owner haven't also.

Just topped the 171K mark. 04 original engine. Obviously have changed coils, plugs, wires, Cat (used member one), Catback system (used member one), The New more powerful starter.... and as of tomorrow new upgraded BHR fuel pump for my baby.

Getting warmer so time to get her cleaned up from winter!!

Oh - I drive my car year round up here in CT! Winter was sooo bad and she hated it - but we made it through. :-)

I hope my car could reach that high mileage with the original engine. I only drive it locally. It might take me maybe only 23 more years to reach the 171k mark. I have now 30k + miles in my car. I average around 6k + a year. Just do the math

2004 rx8 152k

Hey I have 152,000 miles on the original motor. I bought it brand new in 2005 with 14 miles. Just had some work and tune up done and the compression test was very good considering the high miles.

i'm almost at 130K miles on my 05', i bought it new. thought the motor was toast a couple of times, but she pushed through. It has flooded out a couple of times, still using 5W20 and the only thing i have done engine wise is change the coil packs, plugs and wires and added intake and exhaust (No cat ), I have gone through plenty of tires though. she doesn't smoke and i ride her hard. I could probably use a new starter though.

Kinda wanted the motor to go so i could build the new one...

Sad news.......well Ive just clicked over 355,478kms and the engine has finally died. Mostly freeway driving in my 2003 poverty pack but LOTS of fun. What to do now, reco the engine or get one from a wreck?? Any suggestions, I'm Sydney based and want to keep the $$$$ spend low.

Cheers
Wayne.

over 210,000 Miles on the original??....WOW that is a record!

Not living in NSW, I am sure there is a Renesis specialist that could help you, as far as wrecks go, you would want a very low K's one, and can you be sure it will last??..

Try the .au forum, i am sure Andrew can help you.

Great to hear of a really high mile RX8. Sad but inevitable that they will all wear out at some point. If money were no option, I would go with a new engine from a reputable builder, but I faced your situation just a few months ago and money certainly is an option for me. My RX8 is a 2004 and the original engine made it to 145,000 miles (233,000 kilometers) before it developed an internal coolant leak.

A popular vendor here wanted about $4500 for a new short block that he insisted be intalled by an approved professional garage or he wouldn't even warrantee his new short block. I just didn't have that kind of money. I went with a much less used used engine from a wrecked car (66,000 miles on a 2006 engine). I got a complete engine (intake to oil pan with all the sensors and wiring still in place) for $2000 US dollars... with a 6 month warrantee no questions asked! I did the switch out myself in my own garage. My new..er engine has almost 10,000 miles on it now and feels smooth and strong. if I get the same mileage out of the newer engine as the old it will last me for several more years and cost a fraction of a new one.

Best of luck. Hope you are back to 9,000 rpm soon.
