Ha Ha. You will be watching me drive my RX8 for the next 200K miles. I bet that you couldn't last a week before lusting after the RX8 and hating yourself for it.

You are entiteld to your opinion, but that was one factor I looked at when I got this car. Rather then get an SRT4 and soup it up to high heaven with performance that could kill these cars. A part of it is that that cars are considered a higher class. If all it was about was performance you can get far more for far less. Style (or personal preference of it), looks, etc has something to do with the RX8.

If that is not why you got the RX8 good for you. Everybody gets a car for a different reason. This was just one of them.

By all reliable accounts the Civic SI is a very fun car to drive. For the price it's pretty tough to beat as an overall package, GTI is another one that falls into a great all arounder for a great price (as long as you go easy on the options). Both the GTI and the SI aren't far off the RX-8 performance wise as well. The RX-8 will handle better but the GTI and SI will handle plenty well for some spirited driving and they're pretty close in a straight line compared to the RX-8. In addition the SI should hold it's value VERY well, you can't even buy one right now without having to wait a few months.

Don't let the RX-8 zealots fool you into thinking the SI is anything but a fun, sporty, practical, reliable car at a good price.

you can be in the market for a sports car and get much better mileage than the rx8...
The Honda S2000 for example... even the 400hp corvette gets better fuel economy.

Yes, but I don't think the Civics cost 25k.

If they do, then Honda and/or its customers are just silly.

the SI starts around 20k MSRP, i dont know how much demand there is for these things, but usually you should be able to buy most cars well under MSRP and in most cases under invoice. up to 8k under invoice or something for rx8..

Even though rx8's performance isnt on par with its competitors, i always look at it as a a sports car and competing vs the s2k and 350z etc. Being rwd seperates it from the class of entry level sports coupes. Its also priced higher so its a legit contender in the sports car segment, and in some cases when performance isnt the most important measuring stick, is the best car in the segment

Ike is right.

Plus, comparing the Civic to, say, the Mitsubishi Evo, the Civic looks better inside and out, has better build quality, rides far more comfortably, is more reliable, and as an added bonus, we all know Honda will still be solvent in a couple of years, whereas Mitsubishi...well, that's a huge unknown.

That was one of my points. On paper if performance is all you are looking at then the RX8 doesn't make sense. On one of my posts above I made the comment that FWD is a big reason I wouldn't get the Civic Si, but another point is that it's style, and it's class is a factor for me too. Performance wise it is very good in the handling & braking department, but we can get more for less in terms of just pure performance, something else draws you to the RX8.

Class is A factor that made me choose the RX8, not THE factor. The person above who commented on the Mercedes C Class makes it sound like that was a factor we should not consider, that it was ONLY about performance. There are several factors that we look at when we consider a car. If perofrmance is the only one, the RX8 doesn't make sense, but it has a lot more to it.

It's only a huge unknown to those that have no clue what they're talking about. Mitsubishi isn't going anywhere. In respone to the rest...

ditto, at least Mitsubishi is still its own company... At worst they go down the same path as mazda and someone will take control of mitsubishi and keeps it going.

Its unlikely Mitsubishi will be gone from the surface of the earth in a couple of years.

Do we have to compare these 2?

Lets compare something else close to Rx 8's Class,
Rx8 vs new 2008 Skyline?

Oh, I thought the Si was going to cost him around 25k with taxes. Hmm... he probably should get the Civic then. If gas mileage is a crucial factor, the 8 is definitely not a car for you.

Congrats! I think you made the right decision.

I would really like to see some lap times for both the RX-8 and the Si on the same track with the same driver. I have a strong feeling that they will be close. The stock Si is pulling very impressive numbers on the skidpad and the slalom.

Those Honda four bangers rock. No two ways about it. You will definitely get a great price when you sell the Si, unlike the RX-8. At the end of the day your cost of ownership will be significantly lower. And, I don't think you will be sacrificing much in terms of performance.

Enjoy the car!

Well i kinda thought, in my op. Mazda Rx, Nissan Skyline GTR or the Z, Honda S2000, Toyota Supra were to be in simular class then, Honda Civic, Mazda 3, Nissan Sentra, and Scion tC. They seem lil under the GT class no?
It would be sorta like comparing BMW M3 to BMW M6. no? and of course M6 - being the 8.

I have an RX-8. I love it, but lets face it: The Skyline is a monster. The RX-8 is cute and cuddly.

civic hybrid= econobox economy car
civic (base)= econobox
civic Si= sporty econobox

i would get it. but i would rather get the GTi over the Si. and IF rx8 was also an option, i'd take the 8 over any of those fwd cars. My only gripe is fuel economy, otherwise, it's a great driving experience.
