When I bought my 8, December of 2003, I swear the standard "bumper-to-bumper" warranty was 60 months/60,000 miles. So why is this 60 month/60,000 mile "power-train" warranty to be considered a warranty extension? Sounds like hocus-pocus to me...

It used to say "There are no recalls...." However, last friday it had a recall warning "8/21/2006" and was actually a recall for powertrain extended warranty, nothing said about the emissions recall. Clicking on it resulted in a list of 800 numbers to call for more information. Since Saturday however, the recall warning text for "powertrain extended warranty" has been deleted, leaving an empty orange bullet under "recall warning"... So it's like there is a recall warning bullet and date, but no longer any text to describe it.

Looks like that item is currently under constructrion.

If I were you I'd remove it to avoid any BS from the dealer down the line. Put it back on afterwards.

oh well caaaahhhhlvvviiinnn looks like im in the same boat as you, i just dropped my 8 off at the dealership today with my rb intake rb exhaust, act flywheel n clutch, n my B&B midpipe...... i told the service advisor who i became cool with, that i had a midpipe on there becuz they said they had to check the cat converter, i told him its not gonna pass........theres none under there..... n he said how u gonna smog it, i said i have the stock cat at home, n i dont have to smog for another 4-5 years lol.........he said hell see what he can do about havin the tech look the other way on the test lol so well see what happens...........

The one thing a noticed right away was that the stutter at about 6500 is gone. Power feels the same but more linear up to 9k. I noticed no change in idle but my plugs where fairly new anyway.

Like the rest of you, I received my emission recall, and extended powertrain warranty yesterday. I called the dealer to schedule and was told they are over a month out, because of the number of cars coming in. I have an 04 with only 20k on it. I have a couple of questions that the dealer cannot confirm. First, is this going to have any impact on fuel consumption, as in improving my 15mpg avg. Second, reduce the quart of oil every 600miles. Third, get rid of all the rattles in the doors and throughout the entire car!!(just kidding about the last one, but damned, this is a rattle bucket.) And lastly, who is compinsating us for the depreciation we are all about to experiance when we go to trade out!! We are now part of the rx-7 club. You just can't find one with any mileage and the original motor. Sounds to me like same old problems with the improved rotary. I have never had a car is service as much as this and this is the last straw. Time to go buy my trouble free, no issue, 2001 Honda s2000 with 83,000 miles on it back. Hope the current owner has taken good care of it. Ya, I am peeved!!

Ok, I got my car back this evening. No new engine Actually, the service manager said that they've had a lot of 8s in for the recall and zero engine replacement so far. Here, in Texas. 43 consecutive days above 100 degrees this summer. So those of you who worry about getting new engines b/c you live in hot-climate areas, relax (provided that you haven't had the well-known symptoms). For the real cause, my money is on 1) use of synthetic oil 2) random - your 8 happens to have one of those unlucky engines.

I haven't noticed any change in performance (except for that low end power was uhm... the usual - I guess I just got reminded of that after driving the 3.7L Jeep Liberty loaner for 2 days - not a bad car! of course, a completely different world.

After all, I'm glad that I got to keep my hand-assembled in Japan - rotary. I wish you guys the engine you'd rather see in your 8.

Got my car back today. No problems! Maybe I am just imagining it, but the idle seems slightly smoother, and it just feels a little bit more responsive at low rpm now as well. The free tank of gas was a nice touch, and of course the handling has been greatly improved as well. (okay, I made that last one up)

No refill of tank here. So far real hard to judge flash. Fells stronger more pull low and mid range. But I was due for new plugs.

I couldnt tell if it was from the PCM reprogram or the new lead plugs.. but it was one or the other that has helped with the smoother feel at 6500 Plus.

after picking up my car today after the service for the emission recall, i noticed that the car was having problems with acceleration. i drove my car for about 5 miles, and when i stepped on the gas pedal, the engine had a late response. my car is a manual shift, but after the service was done it was driving more like a cheap automatic rental. the technician informed me that they will check the car, but he informed me that they have never had problems with other rx8s after the recall service was done. anyway, the technician said that he was going to give me a call today before they closed and update me, but i have not gotten a call back. i work nights so i was asleep all day, but i did not get any missed call on my cell phone. anyway, i'll find out tomorrow and let you guys know.

Got mine back from the recall update. I have only 3100 miles on the car so the spark plugs were almost brand new. All they did was to vacuum check, re-flashed the PCM and checked the CatConverter. Nothing else. *sigh*

Idling seems a tiny tad smoother but that was it. We'll have to see if the oil consumption goes up since the new firmware is supposed to inject more oil.

I just barely got a new engine 850 miles ago at 28K miles. So, I think the seals will be fine. But, IIRC the recall letter mentioned something about checking the cat. Has anyone had a cat replacement done as part of the recall? I still think that is what is causing such poor mileage for me. I got 14MPG before the new engine and 14MPG after. So, it's something besides the engine.

Had my 2004 RX-8 brought in on a flat bed for the 15K service. Coincidentally enough the engine flooded the day before the scheduled service appointment, hence the flat bed. I'm in Massachusetts. The dealer said the recall is starting first in warmer climates, but since my car was in for the flooding they were performing the recall testing. I hadn't yet received a recall letter, maybe that is why others of you havent yet either.

The called me and asked if I had noticed a decrease in power and said that was part of the recall test.

My concern is that my car may pass the recall test at 15K, but what about at 30K or 45K. Will the redo the recall test in the future?

FYI, when engines were failing in the '99 Miata due to a mis-machined bearing that was boring into the engine, Mazda replaced the faulty engines—including many that were out of warranty. I wouldn't worry if I were you. Mazda usually "does the right thing".
