Got to love the rain

Well thanks to the rain thursday night, my beautiful baby rx-8 is incapacitated. Coming home I took a right turn that caused the car to spin into the median. Now the front driver side wheel assembly is pretty much destroyed. Can't wait to see how much this will jack up my insurance.

actually from the outside, there is almost no damage. there is a scrape at the bottom of the front bumper and a scrape on the rim. On the other side of the tire, the aluminium piece that attaches to the wheel is broken in two places.

Does your car have DSC?

Also have you had someone give you an estimate on the damage? It might be cheaper to fix it yourself than to go through your insurance company. If its just the wheel that's damaged you can buy a new one for around $200. I'd much rather pay $200 than involve my insurance company, but here in Massachusetts insurance is basically legal extortion. Maybe its better where you are.

yes i had dsc, the wheel itself isnt too damaged, it is the whole assembly that connects the wheel to the car that broke

Why did it spin?
Did you take the corner too fast?
Did you not gear down before taking the turn?
Did you brake in the middle of the turn?
Did you apply too much gas coming out of the turn?

Our DSC is great, but if all four tires lost grip (hydroplaning maybe), there's not much it can do. Were the tires the Potenza RE040s? They haven't got very good wet-weather numbers from the TireRack reviews.

Glad you're ok.

sorry, dont have any pics yet. I assume I was going to fast causing it to hydroplane. I was making a right hand turn at green light in 2nd gear. Probably doing about 15 mph. The tires were stock Bridgestone so I got basically no traction. DSC might have helped if it were a bigger skid but we're only talking about a difference of maybe 2 or 3 feet between a normal turn and hitting the median. Hopefully I will hear from the adjuster today and find out how long I will be stuck in a Pontiac Grand Am
