So you think I'm a "***** whipped" "traitor" who sold my 8 to "make babies" in my "Sporty Sedan" that is "slower" than the 8? I'm glad I said nothing bad about the 8, otherwise you people might have gotten upset.

OK, you asked for it! I'm going to spend $500.00 to get the GLI chipped and challenge any of you "low torque" "pistonless" "***** shaped" "chick car" RX-8's to a quarter mile race for pinks You can spend the same amount on mods for your car - I hear the air intakes are great for audio improvement

Please don't bring up the "***** whipped" thing again. I was seriously just joking. I only even made the comment because I had just been discussing how Jetta's were chick cars. I was just giving you a hard time.

He is talking about this chip. http://www.goapr.com/VW/products/ecu...de_mkvgti.html
My buddy has it. It turns a VW into a burnout beast.

If your to lazy to look, it takes you from 197hp/207tq to 252hp/303lb-ft for 599$
It takes the HP/LBs ratio from 15.2 to 11.9 and the TQ/LBs ratio from 14.5 to 9.9.

A 2005 Mustang GT has 300hp 320Tq and it has a 11.7/11.0 ratio. Just so you get an idea.

I've grown past the racing thing cause it really does nothing more then destroy a good car in 1/4 the time for lots of $$$$.

My 8 looks sexy. It doesnt look like a civic front clip mated to a VW rear.
The fact the VW more or less forces you to pay an extra 2k-2.5k on a package to get around having the ugly seats is crazy.

I'll give it to him- the MkV VW Chassis is pretty spiffy- drove a GTi with and without the DSG (shifts pretty sweetly, but in the end there's no rowing of your own gears) and I seriously considered a GTi, but in the end, I opted for the low torque, pistonless, ***** mobile.
Hope ya enjoyed the RX-8!
Happy Wife-ing!

By the way- it sounds about time for a mid-life crisis- you need a sports car ( Cayman S? )

i traded in my 8 for a GTI. i like the GTI, but not nearly as much as the 8. the 8 was so nice looking and fun to drive. the vw is just as quick, and a lot faster if you get the apr chip.

Problems with my Maz6: Clutch replaced at 12k miles, water pump replaced, starter replaced, fan control module replaced, electronic throttle programmed by baboon on crack, plus all recalls, TSB's, etc. and others I probably forgot. My other eleven Mazda's, including the 8, had a total of one problem (air conditioner in the Millenia)

Already had a couple of those (mid-life crisis, not Porsche). I'm in the Silver Back Gorilla stage - hunched over, hairy back, big nipples.

Why not a WRX? Faster chipped, AWD, much better reliability and equally fugly.

Because the GLI is a better car. It seems sometimes that Mazda engineers couldn't tune a FI piston engine if their lives depended on it.

I traded a Maz6s for the RX-8. Didn't want to go there again, even with the turbo on the Speed.

If you didn't like the mazda 6 because of repairs, why did you buy a VW. That thing will be in the shop all the time.

Says you. I like the MkV Golf/Jetta. All of the owners of them like them too.
GTI/GLI > WRX (although the bugeye wasn't so bad)

The GTI/GLI has an interior with better ergonomics, better materials and just plain old better looking. Hell the freaking WRX doesn't even have steering wheel controls for the radio, navigation option, etc. Yeah... it's fluffy... if you didn't want fluff, you'd just get an Evo or STi (and would have never bought an 8), so fluff matters.

Better reliability is probably going to be true. But were VW's known for bad reliability 10-15 years ago? Blame their plants in Mexico and Brazil... Golf/Jetta production was moved there. The MkV GTI's are all made in Germany and so far (been out for 2 year in Europe already too) proven to be much more solid.

All VWs rate very poorly for reliability. Bottom of the heap.

Red light!

197hp... whp maybe. It's 200hp at the crank as rated by VW. It consistently dynos high, so the general concensus is that VW underrated the engine. Likely 220hp or so at the crank.

The APR, GIAC, and Revo ECU flash tunes... I am not sure if the numbers given are wheel or crank... Revo shows 262hp (http://www.revotechnik.com/aboutRevo/news/fsi20.aspx)... but I have seen similar to what you've posted. Add intake and turbo back exhaust to the package and you've got a pocket monster.

The 2005/6 Mustang GT is 300hp at the crank. I believe that they usually dyno 275-280whp.

The GTI isn't sexy, but it is attractive and sporty. You may not care for the looks... so don't buy one. There are plenty of others who do like it... and plenty who like the fabric seats (not me!). You get screwed on packages with the 8 too... have to get bose and sunroof just to get leather... and for many a sunroof "delete" is needed for the extra headroom. Too bad Mazda is too stupid to figure that one out.

ECU reflashes for vw's are nothing more than preprogrammed boost spikes. Ask anyone who actually tunes cars (cobb specifically said they are going to get into vw tuning becuase no one has any idea what they're doing, they said that all the flashes out there are for one time dyno queen runs). I thought about getting a gti but honestly. FWD? Something that insanely ugly?

My opinion: If your car includes an action figure, you bought the wrong car.

edit: while I'm not sure if the gli comes with "fast" you can't really say its any different from a gti.
