It's normal because he has the muffler sitting around, doesn't wanna pay to ship somewhere, and it's not like everyone is gonna be all over buying an OEM Muffler since the idea is to get rid of them and put an aftermarket one on.
So since there is no demand for OEM mufflers, who is going to want to buy it? No one is going across ebay looking for an OEM RX-8 muffler...so since no one is looking for one the most effective way to get rid of it is either to give it away for free, so someone who wants to expirment with it or sell it themselves can take it off his hands...
Or he could goto the junkyard, but that takes time so why bother?
It's like when people leave old junk in their yard and put up a "FREE" sign.
It's not something you can sell for a lot but there are crazy people out there that just might want it for whatever reason...
If he was offering some type aftermarket exhaust for free I'd say becareful cause he's going to kill you.

If you live nearby and need an exhaust, what's wrong with going over and picking the thing up? If you think he's a pervert trying to lure victims with car parts instead of candy, bring a large friend along.
I've occasionally given away or tossed perfectly good parts because I didn't want to be bothered with trying to sell them.
