I'd say wait till after HS, get it as a grad gift. Save up money till then for gas and mods. From what went on in my HS parking lot, I would never want my 8 parked there or blocks near it.
I didn't get this or a car till I was 21. If you are able to afford it and want one then get it. Not a bad choice, it has room, quick but not 400hp quick, DSC/TCS (LEAVE IT ON), and crash safe.
There is just a lot of peer pressure in HS and having this car you will have every idiot always trying to race you. Ill be honest if I had this car in HS I would have caved under it and prolly tried to race, but now I just laugh at the jack a$$ that pulls up and tries to race me. (gets to them more than beating them would)
Like I said do what you feel is right, I personally would wait till grad.
Welcome to the addiction either way!!!...if you decide to wait, stick around on here and read up on it till you get one.

Thanks for being so supportive on here Ken. Don't worry, I'm used to being looked down upon for my age, and it's nothing new. And next time I'll think about making a thread to get familiar around here, if this is the way most people act around here.

I say if you love the RX-8, save up for one. It's a great car.
But I wouldn't go for one with high miles or one that's been beaten on just because it's cheap. I know it's hard to be patient, but wait until you can pay for one in good shape. Then you can have fun spinning triangles all day.

If you want to get it, do so
When I was shopping for mine, Dad kept showing me other cars, but my heart was set on an 8. I spent 3 weeks haggling with the dealership until deal was finalized.
It's a great car, I'm in same boat as you almost, second year in college, 18, been driving for 2 years, had a beat up 1999 Kia Sephia.. I even managed to rip the front axle out when driving :D (no harm done to anyone or anything.. except the car).
One warning though.. expect insurance to be at least 2,000$/year. Mine is 2,500$/year and that's with my parents having a near-perfect 20 year driving record, and "good student" discounts.
Granted, I'm paying a 100% coverage on it.
So before you finalize it, I'd just check with your insurance and get a sure quote from them and do the math, and factor in 60$ a week for gas at least.
You could also look into leasing, and if you co-sign with your parents you can get fairly decent rates, the higher the initial down-payment, the lower the monthly cost and lower the final price for the car if you decide to buy it after the lease.
It'll also build up your credit score if you keep on top of the payments.
Definitely a great car choice
(Just don't do like me and drop the clutch too fast by accident when shifting.. has a tendency to spin the tires and catch attention of cops >.> )

And by the way, my dad is going to loan me the money I need leftover, so therefore, no interest, and a lot of lenience. Too bad I've only driven a manual around twice.... I will have to borrow my friend's car and practice.

I checked again today, and I am currently spending $30 a month for my Nissan on insurance. For my 8, it will raise to $190 a month... I am thinking all these expenses out thank goodness.
And by the way, my dad is going to loan me the money I need leftover, so therefore, no interest, and a lot of lenience. Too bad I've only driven a manual around twice.... I will have to borrow my friend's car and practice

You'd be surprised at how easy manual is to learn, push pedal to 2K rpms, slowly lift off clutch for starting.
I got mine a few weeks ago, never drove a manual before, took a day, not even, and I could drive, still stalled a few times when on the roads, but after a few days I got the hang of it.
Just do laps around your neighborhood, stop at random areas, practice starting/stopping, or go to an empty parking lot.
I drove in circle around the pool's parking lot for an hour.. hehe.. felt like throwing up after though..

I've already said that I do. And I don't recall telling you "you can't tell me what to do with my money". I'm sorry if you put implication on my words, but none were intended.
I didn't say that, but again, I hoped you would have assumed such.
I never said you can't tell me what to do with my money. And I've done nothing but welcome all of your opinions. And for someone with such "experience", you should know that being rude to another for no apparent reason is foolish.
I've obviously said that I wanted the 8 already, or else I wouldn't have posted this thread in an RX-8 forum.
Because your financial decisions as a teenager weren't as good as mine, I should suffer and buy a P.O.S. car? And if you had taken the time to read my thread, you would already see that I have a car, and have been driving for around 2 years(learner's permit, etc). And my car right now is nicer than most peoples' in my school, but you have no grounds to stand when you say I will be a douche bag and brag about my car. Of course I will brag about it a bit when I get it, who here hasn't?
Common sense can tell you that me buying an 8 will not affect you in anyway possible because you are 2 states away from me. And the only reason I quoted back on this, because instead of posting to help, you decided to post and make me look bad with this **** poor attack. If this is all you are going to post, then please don't take the time to reply.
And your 8 was necessary? If we all went by what we needed, then none of us would have 8's, but we would have hybrids with great gas mileage and got us from point A to point B.
Thanks for being so supportive on here Ken. Don't worry, I'm used to being looked down upon for my age, and it's nothing new. And next time I'll think about making a thread to get familiar around here, if this is the way most people act around here.
How would this be my first car? Did the 2001 Nissan Sentra, that I bought with my own cash, worked for with my own two hands, just dissapear and the RX-8 is now my first car?
Again, I appreciate the positive comments you post on here, and help me out with your well thought out posts. The way you act on here proves that you grew up to be a responsible adult (not trying to suck up.... but still).
You do have a point there, but luckily my school has cameras in the parking lot, so any damage sent to my car will be dealt with accordingly. And I am pretty well-liked in that school, so I doubt this will be a problem. But nonetheless, you bring up a valid point.
Thanks

Ditto. Well I hope he gets a RX-8, drives it like a 16 year old, then smacks into a Bimmer 7 series and ruins his car. Or something along those lines, like a minivan plowing into his rear and pushing him into oncoming traffic at a red light.

I speak from statistics, grown ups use statistics. Do you know what a St-uh-tis-tick is? It's where YOU, and people in YOUR AGE GROUP and GENDER category, drive up each others INSURANCE PRICES because you get into MORE WRECKS and are more **** to filing INSURANCE CLAIMS.

Unless your parents are paying for gas, i say its not worth it. If you have a good job and can afford gas, then go ahead. And if your going for speed, you can get cheaper cars that are faster. I am 16 years old too, and i love my RX8 despite it sucking up gas and not being so fast, but its still a pretty fast car. Also, the looks on it are amazing, which is why i got it If you have the money then definitely go for it!

firstly, going to iraq is not a good reason to buy a car, trust me.
secondly i know where your at right now, i was in the same situation. my first car burnt down (long story) and i wanted an 05 mustang GT cause it was the new year and i was graduateing. i saved up almost 5 grand and my parents still refused to help, so i got a 98 ford escort zx2. and my god that was one of my favorite cars ever. after an intake, and header back exhaust you couldent have told that car that it wasnt fast. but i digress. the point is that i didnt get any help, no insurance or gas or help buying. then my sister totals it, and i buy another car, an old 94 mazda MX-3 which i still drive during the winter. and just like you i join the army.
with the signing bounuses they are giving out now, you could buy a brand new rx-8 off the lot with minimal payments. if you really want one, why sell yourself short now for a POS 04 thats been in an accident for 12 grand? the problem with rx-8's (and most other enthusiest cars) is that they dont depreciate with other cars. if they are cheep they most likely have been in a wreck or their owner wouldent be selling them. if they are expensive its cause they were taken care of. there is no middle groud of a car thats just been driven alot, cause people hold on to them. you want one to fix up and its just not going to happen. there arnt any mildly messed up motors cause they are all still under waranty, or dumbasses like us boost them and blow them to smitherines. body work on a 30k car is a small price to pay for the owner. its not like a civic that isnt worth repairing minor body damage. like i said its all or nothing with there guys.
i started looking at 8's with 14k in mind, and after reaserch i realised there was no way i could find one in the condition i wanted for less than 20k. and although your parents are helping, the faucet will run dry eventually trust me. besides its just another thing they can take away when you get in trouble (all high schoolers get in trouble)
wait till you graduate, join the army, use your bounus to buy a new 8, cruise in it and pick up all the chicks at ft benning. trust me it will be worth it. besides, between basic, AIT, MOS training, then if you decide to do airborne or ranger school, it will be over a year before you get shipped overseas anywhere if at all depending on your MOS

To the OP, if you get yourself the car you really want (the RX8) there isn't a feeling in the world like it. The first car I bought with my own money was a 1973 Corvette Stingray which I poured money and time into to fully restore. I loved that car more than anything. More power to you for working hard and picking out a car you like and going for it. Sometimes that motivation will take you places in life even if you just want to make a few more bucks to pay for gas. My only "lesson learned" I can offer is to make sure you do your research before picking out the car. Get a car that doesn't have a bad history, damage, or gremlins lurking in the rotors. The Corvette I bought as a kid damn near killed me when the brakes went out at a stoplight once, and I sunk another $10,000 into it past the purchase price before it was close to finished, then someone drove a truck over it while it was parked in front of my house. You cannot prepare for other people's stupidity even if you have a decent head on your shoulders.
Talk the choice over with your folks, make sure you have all the finances mapped out (and it sounds like you are thinking about that) and when you take the plunge and get the car, make sure you take care of it. I never ever drove my Corvette like an ******* because it was my baby and I didn't want anything to happen to it. I never drove it drunk, I didn't race like a maniac etc... all that beautiful fiberglass would have shattered like an egg.
My last advice such as it is... be careful out there. A lot of people in this thread have harped on "don't race, don't race!", and I know it sounds stupid and ...old. A lot of the people on here, myself included have a lot of experiences when we were your age or a little bit older that make us say that. I nearly died racing a long time ago and almost took the other guy with me. Just play it safe, enjoy the car and best of luck to you!

Oh, and to all of the people that get mad at us 16 year olds for driving an Rx8, are you just made that a young kid has the same car as you? Who cares?!?!? we can all be cool with each other since we all drive these nice cars, and sure some of us might be stupid and race them, but its not like you cant race them when your 25 or 35! Just because were teens doesnt mean we race them. RX8's arent even fast unless you put alot of money into them, so if we were looking to buy a street racing car we would buy a different car. We buy this car because of the looks. No offense to any of the people talking down to us, it just gets annoying feeling unwanted here.

It's where YOU, and people in YOUR AGE GROUP and GENDER category, drive up each others INSURANCE PRICES because ...
I presume you never were. Good job.

But in all honestly, it's not that I'm saying "screw u for choosing to be a 17yr old male", I'm saying that "because you're a 17yr old male, this is the case". 1+1=2. If you are these 2 things, you get this result. It's common sense, not me just hating on him (like the Lafay. guy )
