At which gear do you "redline" at?

is redline really necessary?
Yes, if you want to do the most to keep your engine healthy. I don't think redline means hitting gas shut off, but means 8000+.

I try to do it at least once a day if not everytime I go out for a drive.

I usually do it in 1st or 2nd as another poster said you'll end up at 90 in 3rd.

You'll find that redlining at least once a day will do wonders for your MPG too

yea...it makes it go down

but, redlining the car gets rid of carbon build-up, so redline once a day is a must!

Thanks for all the responses guys, I redlined in first gear yesterday, then stopped after I heard the "beep". Pretty cool thing to do, as well as get rid of the carbon buildup.

Thanks to the guys who sent those vids in my pm

Just a side note, I just added AMSOIL diff and trans fluids. What a difference it makes. Makes redlining even more fun. Enjoy the addiction.

Good to know, I'll definitely go with AMSOIL next time for those fluids.

I got to be honest here, I'm not much of a gearhead so when should I check all those fluids? I should probably know this, but I usually just bring it to the Mazda dealership, they treat me real well, my mom has only owned Mazdas since 1989 (first Mazda she bought was a 1989 626, that car was a workhorse, lasted until 2004 when the floor started coming apart, then she leased a 2004 Protege, never had a problem with that car, then she re-leased a 2008 Mazda 6.... anyways the dealership always treated us well and was fair priced.

You should do some searching for more info/background, but this is it in a nutshell. Transmission fluid should only be GL-4 rated (GL-5 will eat up precious metal bits). That leaves only Redline and AMSOIL as GL-4 only transmission fluid. The differential can take GL-5. More options for that but most people stick with same brand. The trans and diff. fluids are different, make sure its not the same 4 bottles (2 each for trans and diff). I think more people choose Redline on here because its easier to get retail. AMSOIL is a bit like AMWAY with member sellers. However, I think AMSOIL gets better reviews overall. Redline is crunchy when the car is cold from reports on here.

I bought my car used at 12K and lived with the Mazda stuff in there till my 30K servicing. If you have the tools, garage and some car know-how you can do it yourself. There is thorough thread in the DIY section on here.

How many miles do you have on your car and when was the last major servicing - fluid swapout?

I do most of my redlining in 2nd and in 3rd. I redline 3rd while doing my favorite 6 to 3 shift on the freeways.

2nd typically. Usually not in a position to downshift to first and third is a tad fast.

If you want to be kind to your transmission don't redline in 1st , take 1st up to about 7000.
Getting a smooth chage from 1st to 2nd after a redline is difficult and very hard on the trans .

I red line 2nd and 3rd .

Yeah...if it has pistons. But we don't want those things anyway.

I'll redline in first or second. Every now and then I can do it in third - at least get up to 8K or so. Third is better since you've got the throttle open wider and you're at high rpm longer. Negative aspect is that it puts you into presumed reckless in most US jurisdictions. On ramps tend to be safe, and it's fun to have to decelerate to merge from the acceleration lane.

You don't actually have to redline every day to prevent carbon build up. Once every couple days is fine too...

If you end up owning an 8 for 6 years like me, you may find that the urge to gun it all the time subsides eventually.

My daily commute takes me on the freeway at 1:00pm so they are usually empty. I redline 2nd or 3rd getting on everyday. Its a great feeling.

2nd. The first day I go my car I took it up to 130 and I still had 1000 RPMs until redline; and then I realized that I was driving a 6 speed.

Ken, what is "presumed reckless", how is it determined, what are the consequences (specifically in AZ), and how exactly does law enforcement prosecute someone in court on a presumption?

I really like third, but it's begging to get pulled over.

So first and second.
