gauge cluster removal

I was wondering if anyone has tooken out the oem gauge cluster b4? if so how hard is it to install and unistall them?

the reaon im asking this is b/c my rx8 has 68k miles on it but i have a new motor w/ 12 k miles on it, so i htought about spending a 100bux and buying a newer cluster offa ebay w/ around 12k miles on the odometer.

Now im not tryin to sell my car and say it has less miles i just dont like looking at that 68k number lol. I dont want you thinking im a scammer or anythign just kinda **** about high mileage display and since i cant afford a new car right now im just gonna make mine feel new. lol anyways let me know how the removal process is.

it's not hard at all !!

....but you can always reprogram your instruments to show what you want.

...some general car maintenance is mileage specific though.... you should keep your original mileage and then use the replacement engine miles only for the engine maintenance...

The shop manual says that if replacement is necessary, the Old cluster must be hooked up to the dealership computer in order to get the new cluster to the same mileage.

So, unless you can hack into the CANBUS system, you're out of luck.

Now, RotaryResurrection has posted that he has sucessfully installed a used cluster with different mileage.

(the above is IMHO, after research. I'm always willing to be proven wrong.)

ps. I won't be the one to say that this is also illegal - I believe it is a felony. (even if you don't intend to sell your car).

I dont want to reprogram it, i just want to change it with a cluster w/ lower miles. theres nothing illegal about that, is there? thats exactly what i want to do like rotary resurection just install a new cluster that reads lower miles, its for my own sanity, if i ever sell the car i would tell whoever that the cluster was chaged at so many miles.

FWIW,

I dont want to reprogram it, i just want to change it with a cluster w/ lower miles. there's nothing illegal about that, is there?
Don't know where you live, and it doesn't really matter, but if it is important to you to know and follow the law in this case, then, please read this bit from State law:

IC 9-19-9-4
Service, repair, or replacement of odometer
Sec. 4. This chapter does not prohibit the service, repair, or replacement of an odometer if the mileage indicated on the odometer remains the same as before the service, repair, or replacement. If the odometer is incapable of registering the same mileage as before the service, repair, or replacement, the odometer shall be adjusted to read zero (0)

And,

"a person A person may not:
(1) disconnect;
(2) reset; or
(3) alter;
the odometer of any motor vehicle with intent to change the number of miles indicated on the odometer."

Note that none of the above has anything to do with selling the car.

Now, the above is from Indiana; only because it was the first Google hit I got. The law might be the same or different where you live. Link

Now, my panties aren't in a bunch over this. I'm just sayin'.....

Also, here is the link I mentioned earlier from RotaryResurrection. I just want to make it clear that he was trying to have the new cluster show the same mileage as the one he removed.

LOL, Felony loves company.....

According to the Catholic Church, just thinking about doing something is a worse sin than actually doing it.

We're all Felons (at heart).

Mod Note: Not pushing religion; not pushing Felony; not (currently) pushing my 8...

I dont think itll work man, otherwise everyone would just replace their cluster.

Silver is correct, it is a felony and you could get in some serious ****, I highly recommend not screwing with the odometer.

Besides, only your engine is new, the rest of the car has 68K miles on it so you would be LYING to the new owner.

Just stay legit man, 68K miles isnt that high anyways, you shouldnt have too much trouble selling it.

I had someone close to me do something like this to their Denali to stay under warranty. The thing had 58K miles on it for 4 years
