The President of the United States cannot control the prices of oil. At least not directly.
What we do have is the end of Summer (summer demand, gas blend requirements), a lack of hurricanes (causing damage to the rigs in the gulf), the Iran situation is calm, and people are selling off oil commodities in droves. Combine all of them and you'll see why prices are dropping.
OPEC is meeting end of the year to talk about dropping production in order to stop the prices from dropping even further.
Opec can do what they want, but at the end of the day, a lot of control is out of their hands besides reducing production output... OPEC are not the ones that inflated prices, their sale price per barrel has not increased too much over the last few years... what has changed is the aggressiveness of the hedge fund managers who put out stupid fears and expectations on oil to increase price of the futures contracts... The hedge fund managers are the ones making excuses such as "pending" hurricanes, or just how much production will be lost from the BP pipes, and the war in the middle east... all of these events are just used to pump up FAKE prices, like the stock market...
since most of the doomsday $hit did not happen, guess what, the prices went down and the hedge funds losts billions of dollars... one large fun lost 6 billion and almost went out of business... now we are settling in to more normal prices and adjusting from the inflated ones... just like the housing market

Broke the $2 mark today, gas is at $1.99 by my work. Woohoo, still think it's higher than it should be. Eight years ago when I moved to the St. Louis area, gas was $0.86 a gallon. We should easily be a lot closer to that price.
Wow. Eight years ago we were still over $1 but not by much. It was at most $1.10s. I think the last time I remember it being below $1 here I was around 10 and it was something like $.99 a gallon.
Woohoo! I saw gas at $1.97 today. If I could go back a few years, I never thought I'd see the day I'd be happy to see gas near the $2 mark. Only 2 years ago, at Sevenstock 7, I was mad because I had to pay $1.99 for a gallon at one station in L.A. Then I was even more mad because another one was at $2.10. It was right around $1.60 here then and I wasn't happy about high prices then. The way to get people to accept $2 a gallon gas is to get them used to $3 a gallon gas. It's true. Next time it goes up near the $3 a gallon mark, I'm going to find a way to run my car on burning rubber, coal, and baby seals. Screw the environment and all of these different blends and concerns. My bank account is more important.
91 is down at the cheapeast around $2.759 in the South Bay, but that was a Costco Gas a couple days ago.
I wonder where they buy their gas from. I am sure its from some major since its Costco.

A USA Today/Gallup poll last week found that 42 percent of the roughly 1,000 adults surveyed across the United States believed
President George W. Bush's administration had "deliberately manipulated the price of gasoline so that it would decrease before this falls elections."

PS: I hope Bush keeps it up. I would not mind $0.30 per gallon prices.
Actually, though it's worse for me, I like it when prices are high. Whatever it takes to remove can't-see-around Explorers, Navigators and Hummers from our highways. Even if I can't afford driving as often or as far, it would be worth it just to see our roads filled with cars again.
Quick off-topic (sort of) question. Is it practical/smart/feasible to run regular instead of premium in the RX8? 93 isn't stretching my wallet, but I would like to be able to spend a little less and get 85ish if there wouldn't be a big impact on reliability or performance.
