the mazda red and blue night display seems to really be nice during the night but when the lights are on at dusk the cluster may seem a bit dim

I'm surprised there's no oil pressure gauge on the S2.

It's not meant to be subjective; the white is for when it's bright out (daytime, snowstorm, driving down the Vegas strip) and the red is for when it's dark. Why? The red is hard to read when it's bright; it's drowned out by all the ambient light. And the brighter, white color forces your iris to close down, reducing your night vision in the dark.

So red at night (which you get automatically by turning on your headlights) and white by day (which you get automatically when your headlights are off). Why the ability to change it? For the rare situations mentioned above, when your headlights are on and it's bright out.

Now you know.

I prefer S1, but I have an issue with both: the two smaller circles flanking the tach look weird to me with non-circular "gauges" in them. To me, they look like they should contain circular gauges - or perhaps just one circular gauge (which, of course, means the circles would have to be smaller, which I know throws off the artistry of the small circle - big circle - small circle design).

I like S2 Dash cuz I think it looks cooler

but I hate S2's steering wheel, it feels cheap and it shares with almost all other Mazdas

I couldn't find a series 2 with all the dashboard lights on to make the comparison more equal.
the lighting makes the interior a bit messy. it looks better than the pic you have in person.

also the steering wheel is pretty nice looking to me compare to S1

Sure, but an on/off gauge looks better than a warning light. Functionally, they're the same. I must admit that the warning light is a bit more honest about things.

Prefer the S2 dash mainly because of the "font" they used on the numbers haha... also because I have an S2 probably. One thing I don't like is the size of the steering wheel... huge miata steering wheel. Would a S1 steering wheel work in an S2? Not sure if they're smaller but they look smaller.
