So I was thinking today about the warranty on the 8. I still have a while to go before mine runs out, but when it does. How much will it cost to repair if our 8's flood after the warranty is over. Its bound to happen and has anyone had their warranty run out and it happen? Just curious because right now everything is covered but what happens 2 years from now when the warranty is out and we start running into problems....?

Had this thought because I have had the car flood once, followed all the normal procedures and it still flooded....still can't figure out why that was a few months ago and sometimes it takes a long few seconds to start. I don't really worry about it too much now, but when the warranty is out then I will not want to have to deal with it.

 

Not to steal the thread but what exactly does the dealer do to get a flooded rotary going? Change the plugs? Any insight would be appreciated :D

I think this post is great, it's true...what will happen? I think if you follow the rules not to flood the engine...and it happens, then Mazda should be held responsible.

I read all I can on the subject and I do everything I need to, to avoid flooding. If it ever happens (and it's not my fault) I would be angry to say the least. Now, if the warranty is over and it happens eventhough I follow the rules...then I think Mazda should take care of for the sake of the rotary comunity.

 

Because this was a known issue affecting cars made between a certain time, I would think Mazda would honor it after the warranty just to save face. IMHO

My 8 flooded twice, I've been in contact with Maxda twice and proceeding under the Lemon Law. They still have the problem with the 05's, this is unacceptable.

 

Good Question. Think about it. Most of the people who have RX-8's right now will have traded them in by the time the warranty has run out. They will then be bought by blue collar folks, like myself, who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty. My 7 has been out of warranty for 12 years and hasn't been to a mechanic since I bought her, and she has "Flooded" 4 or 5 times. I've always been able to start her by pulling the EGI fuse and cranking her for short periods then putting the fuse back in and "VRRRRRROOOOMMMMMM", on my way.

I strongly recommend anyone not mechanically inclined trade the RX-8 before it hits 50,000 miles. The flooding only gets worse as the seals wear out, and I should know. My 88 RX-7 convertible has 185,000 miles on the original engine!

Hey I've been trying to find information on my question and this was the most related thread I can find. Well my question is what happens if you modify your engine and then it floods? Can the dealership say that it's no longer covered under warranty and they won't fix it? I remember hearing on here that Mazda said they'll unflood it at least one time even if it isn't under warranty. I would really appreciate some responses on this.

The dealer can say whatever they want and some will look for any excuse to avoid covering a warranty claim. What kind of modifications? My guess would be that if the mods are obvious and could possibly have an impact on starting the car or potentially causing a flood, they would certainly try to avoid covering a repair. But there does not seem to be any consistency from one dealer to the next on what they will and will not cover, so there is no way to answer your question definitively. So that's probably why no one is replying to your post.

Just dealt with the flood problem this weekend... had to have my car towed... all that jazz... long story short - changed Spark plugs, couple o' gaskets, and I got a new starter - warranty of course - but you can imagine what 100 bones of labor and the rest in parts would have cost if I didn't have the warranty - so there's the answer...

Suggestion - NEVER, EVER, EVER start the car and NOT let it warm ALL the way up - that should keep you from flooding... I hope.

 

I know that I should have left it on for longer but its only happened once b4 with 43000 miles and I pushed my luck. It was stupid yes, but they should cover something that is a constant problem with all 8s. It is obviously a problem with the car and not something that I did. I doubt they'll see things my way though.

 

Flooding is not technically covered under warrenty. Unless extenuating circumstances my dealer told me Mazda will only pay for 1 deflood then its out of your pocket. It is not something wrong with the car, it is just the nature of rotaries. They have told you how to avoid it so if its flooded its not due to a malfunction but rather driver error. The cost can be upwards of $400 depending on how long the tech has to spend deflooding it.

I can confirm the opposite.

Some cars/customers have had multiple flood issues and MNAO pays for every one.

There is a kit that the dealer should have in stock with a battery and starter along with a upgraded set of plugs. If Mz did not plan on covering this issue why would they ship out these kits?

The dealer was really helpful actually. I usually go to a claremont dealership where they're jerks to me, but I happened to flood my car out in riverside so AAA sent it to the riverside dealership. They deflooded it, not caring that I had the piggyback unit, and actually fixed stuff that i didn't ask for. i.e. my driverside visor broke and they replaced it w/o me asking so I was really happy when i picked my car up.

On another note, when I called the mazda roadside assistance to get my car, I called at 2pm. They couldn't get a car out to me until 5:30!! Oh well I was at someone's house so I wasn't stranded, no big deal. Anyways they had AAA pick my car up and drop it off at the dealership. The dealership calls me the next day saying "We were hoping to have your car finished by today, but there was a situation. The tow truck dropped it off after we were closed, so his solution was to leave the window down and the keys in the ignition, completely destroying the battery." What kind of bullshit is that!! I need to give AAA a call and demand them to pay for a new battery. They're just lucky nothing was stolen out of my car.
