I've had the 8 for a year now and I just realized I've never driven more than 100 miles in a stretch. Next week I'll be taking it on a trip. Can't wait to see if I break the 20mpg barrier :D Woo-hoo!

 

Try testing different speeds to see what mpg you get. I think that 65mph has significant improvements over 75 and higher, enough to be worth it

 

I have done a few log trips in my RX8. Can get 300 miles to a tank if you keep it below 80. Most trips have been gotten 21~22 mpg. Did break 24 when I was in the northern Georgia mountains were most speed was 55~65. So agree with Zaku-8 about 65. I have buried the fuel gage way below empty and have yet to run out or take more than 15.2 Gallons.

 

Just drove mine 500+ miles to Montreal, and 500+ miles back, and I found that I posted heaping gains in EPA mileage! I didn't get a perfect mileage calculation, but it was definitely over 23 MPG, and the car was as smooth and powerful as ever. All in all, a very fun weekend.

I have got 24mpg @ 75mph
27.5mpg @ 65mph
29.5mpg @ 55-60mph
Its hard to keep the revs down but if you have some discipline and are just curious enough you to can do it. I usually get 23 on the hwy and 17 around town.

 

I get 21-23 MPG cruising at 80-90 MPH on long trips.

I get 12-14 MPG around town.

 

I'm taking mine on a 300-mile sojurn in the late month with my kids to my mom's house in Iowa. Planning to take all two-lane highways there (as opposed to 4 1/2 mind-numbing hours on I-80) ...

In Canada, did you buy gas in litres or IMPERIAL gallons? If gallons, did you convert IMPERIAL gallons to US gallons before calculating your fuel economy?

 

Just litres, but he's from Philly, so probably didn't make that mistake. I usually get 22mpg (Imp), and 19 US......

....anyway, this thread started with great 'roadtrip' adventure possibilities, let's not have it decline into another whine-fest about gas mileage!

Isn't that pretty risky for a rotary to run your tank down that low? I have heard that it is a bad, bad idea with the FD.

 

OK, then - over new year's we drove from Delaware to Snowshoe, WV to go skiing. The Delaware --> DC --> Lewisburg, WV part is just absolutely dull, droning-along interstate, but the Lewisburg --> Marlinton --> Snowshoe stretch was great (even though we weren't in the RX-8 at the time , and is worth a return trip just to drive it in the 8 in warmer weather.

As good as that was, it gets better. On the way back we did Snowshoe --> Marlinton --> I-64 near Lexington, VA and that was another awesome drive for any car, especially the 8.

I'm headed from PA to San Diego - for good. Cal-i-for-nia here I come. Can't wait to leave this crappy snow behind for sunshine and dry pavement. I am really looking forward to some quality time with the 8 as well. I just hope I it doesn't snow the first 500 miles before I can get far enough south.

For those of you who have spent some time on the highways with the 8 does it get more attention from the, er, speed enforcement folks than your typical seedan?

 

I did a round trip that totalled 750 miles over the Thanksgiving Holiday and I didn't notice the patrol cars giving me any special attention.

Probably depends to at least some degree on the color of your car. Yellow or maybe red would theoretically catch the eye of an officer of the law where gray or green might not. Just my opinion. Haven't put enough long-distance, open-road miles on my Titanium gray car yet to test the theory.
