Smile A few questions for a possible RX-8 owner

undefinedundefined

I am a possible soon to be rx-8 owner but was curious as to what I should look for in one like what stuff and what is more fun to drive. I know 6 speeds are but I will be getting the automatic because I just do too much stuff some times while I am driving. Does anyone know what the least common color to get other than the forest green cause I want one that is not alot in common for colors. I see the silver and red alot but what about the blue??? I have heard that I should look in to the makes made after January 2004 because of all the first time issues it had and those cars made after that time didn't have any (hence the cold start and shut off deal right after without letting car warm up) if that is true not sure??? I have looked at alot of posts on stuff to study and little just want to know the pros and cons and what I should really look for in one. I have got my special options I truely want but want some opinions and stuff from all you rx-8 owners.

don't underestimate the automatic ... it peppy and fast. Green is the least common as of now. Titanium is the most popular. Choose what you want and enjoy. If you upgrade to the M flash, you should not have the flooding problem but good to warm up for at least 3 minutes on cold mornings

If you just like it for looks, than the automatic is fine, but it is not a high performance car (0-60 is about 8-9 sec.). The green, & blue are uncommon. If you really want to be rare get the yellow. They only made it for the 04's, and it is being replaced in the 05's by white.

What kind of stuff do you do while driving? The kind of stuff that you'd do alone?

Check out the color polls; There are quite a few of them. E.g. https://www.rx8club.com/polls-70/what-color-do-you-own-30506/

Spend some time browsing this forum and use the Search function for specific issues. You will find an infinite amount of info here.

Here's a piece of well-intentioned advice - quite screwing around doing other "stuff" while you're driving!!! What YOU are doing isn't driving, it's just steering. Maybe you need to watch those drivers ed videos again, with the accidents and injuries/fatalities. Driving is serious business that requires a certain level of concentration, a level that simply isn't possible when you're yakking on the phone, eating, etc. It's certainly possible to relax and have fun at it, but you have to be paying attention to what you're doing. In that regard, a manual trans keeps you more involved with what's going on with the car, and can make you a better, more attentive driver. Driving a manual is pretty easy, there's no big deal - that's why 80% of Europeans, including little old grannies, drive manual trans cars with no problems (and their traffic is at least as bad as ours).

I have heard that I should look in to the makes made after January 2004 because of all the first time issues it had and those cars made after that time didn't have any (hence the cold start and shut off deal right after without letting car warm up) if that is true not sure???
No, not true. There are certain characteristics of the rotary engine that didn't disappear on a certain date - the engine still uses oil by design, and you have to check it frequently to make sure it's not low. The rare flooding if shut down without warming up issue is pretty well gone by a ECU reprogramming, but wasn't related to any build date and the older cars have pretty much all been updated. There really weren't any significant first-time issues, there certainly were no real changes to production components mid-year or anything like that (there aren't any real changes to any components even for 2005).

Good luck!

Regards,
Gordon

haha

sorry but the comment about 'I do too much stuff while driving' really pissed me off I don't want headlines of "some guy on a cell phone kills a family of 4 in his RX-8"

sorry but DO NOT GET THIS CAR till you start driving your car first instead of doing something and then driving in the background

ok about the driving thing guys....I mean I like to swith around with the radio and rotate my cds. I know there is a rx-8 with the 6 disc cd changer but the one I am getting does not have that and also I had a manual for the past 5 years and want a automatic. Plus I also know that the radio and volume controls are on the steering wheel and I also like to drink my coffee on my way to work and don't balance too well with a manual. Irish8 why would you say a honda 2005 would suit me better? I dislike honda's .

Once you're used to stick, you should be able to do anything you can do with an auto, in manual, which includes eating a big mac and drinking a supersized coke. The only thing I've found difficult is to talk while shifting But an ear bud will fix that right up.

zoom_zoom....I was trying to be a smart ****!! I guess I'm not very good. On a serious note, you should really look at the manual, I think you would be unhappy with the auto. The lack of power will eat at you. Colour wise, I would echo what the others have said...try to find a yellow. If you buy an '05, go white. These two colours are as rare as they come.

Oh yeah...believe it or not, the black is not common either.

Good luck.

zoom_zoom...most cars have very little difference between an auto and manual tranny in regards to HP. However the 8 is a different beast!! The auto has approx 198 HP, where as the manual has 247 HP. That's a huge difference. Trust me you will NOT b happy with the auto longterm. No offense to auto owners.

how much different is the bose 300 watt audio system from the basic one they come with??? I just want to know if the sound is like 10x better and if the standard is semi crappy. I am use to a little base in my car that I have and if I buy this car and have standard is the sound quality not soo good without the bose audio???

zoom_zoom....I have the regular Bose system in my 8. It rocks!! I think the main difference is that the premium Bose system is a 6 in dash, I'm not 100% on that. I am sure you would be happy with the regular Bose system.

far as I know, there is only one bose audio system, and it has 9 speakers.

the 6 disk cd changer, minidisc, mp3 player, etc are all options, and are unrelated to the type of audio system your car has (base or bose).

Also, while white just came out, it being "rare" is only temporary.

Right now, all that can be said is Red and Ti are the most common. It's hard to tell much more than that due to the limited number on the forum who vote on the color polls.

You should pick what you like best - but Yellow will definately be the rarest since it's retired.

ok I have read several posts on the stereos for this car and is it really that bad??? What is the sound difference between the standard one and also the 300watt bose audio system one which by the way I have read isn't soo great. Right now in my car I have a Kenwood deck and a pair of 10" subs in the back. Will I be severly disappointed or is the sound better than what everyone else has been saying????

it sounds fine to me, but i've never been one to mess with the audio in a car. A 15' base speaker in the truck doesn't add anything for my music enjoyment.

So do all the rx-8's have the bose audio system in them I thought it was a package? Or they all come with bose and the package with the upgrade is a 300watt bose audio system with a 6 disc cd player??????

some have the base model (non bose) and some have the bose (9 speakers and audio pilot, boots up with 'rx8')

like jasonhamilton said for a disc drive you can have one disc cd, 6 disc cd, or mp3 cd

the one disc is standard in the base and bose model...you have to upgrade to a 6 disc many times dealers will upgrade it as a perk in hopes to sell better

I'm moving to XBMC so I'll probably never use the cd player again and may install a dvd-rom drive there instead and not connect it to the HU

Looking at your posts you certainly seem fixated on the sounds, not the driving zoom_zoom33! Perhaps you'd be better off with a BIG Bose Stereo w/wheels :D . But seriously, you are definitely in need of 1) a dealer visit, 2) a test drive in a 6spd & slush box, and 3) a couple options brochures to pour over.

That would be a heck of a lot more fun than jawboning about this stuff w/us here. Then come back and YOU can compare notes with us. US telling you this and that is pretty useless without a point of reference in your own experience, don't you think?

And I would recommned the automatic to you, not that I would own one myself, but I don't want to hear about you being plastered into the dash in an accident whilst adjusting those Bose ***** and flipping Cds. Further, the quick steering in this car requires some deliberate attention... i.e. 'knee driving' and inattention to the straight ahead path will get you off road quicker than you can say 'sports car reflexes'.

Good luck
