Exhaust "Finishers" ?

I did a search but I didn't really find an answer, so help would be appreciated.

I have a Brilliant Black, 2004 Grand Touring. Purchased pre-owned.
I have always assumed that the exhaust finishers on my RX8 were the same color as the bumper, BLACK.

This morning I was washing the car and I gave the exhaust finishers a good cleaning, and to my surprise there is some silver color underneath the grime. I couldn't clean them too much because I didn't have the right cleaners with me and I didn't want to risk harming them by using the wrong product.

Anyone know what was stock with the '04 GT?
Is it maybe just silver painted plastic?
I would doubt that it is chrome unless it is a very thin plated chrome.
Any guesses?
Thanks.

For reference here are some finishers from rxstrakes.com

i don't think they shipped with any cars stock. Mazda sells them for something like $250 for a set. They bolt on with a single screw on the top of the exhaust shroud.

They are a thin metal with rubber/plastic around the edge, and really not worth the cash unless you can get them used off someone for cheap. If you have exhaust issues, the heat will still effect the shrouds, especially since the finishers do not completely cover the inside of it. The outside edges are still exposed.

So stock was BLACK and plastic?

No exhaust issues.

And YES to the rubber/plastic around the edges.

Like mysql said, they did not come with the 8 but were an accessory that could be purchased. All the 8's from the factory do not have anything between the exhaust and the bumper. So yes, it is black if you were to take the shroud off. Try some Nevr Dull to shine them up. Post some before and after photos.

i can say i bought a set three years ago and should have saved some cash.they collect a lot of little rocks and are not to easy to clean but on a side note if your looking at the right angle they look cool but still a bit pricey like all mazda parts.

WOO!

You guys were right.......I pulled them off, shined them up with some Meguiars Chrome Polish, and they polished up nice.

I feel like I tried on a pair of pants I haven't worn in a year and found $20 in the pocket.

Nice.....subtle......
