Exclusive TEST DRIVE! dannOBRE Performance RX8

See pics here:
https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-multimedia-photo-gallery-6/photos-wa-state-rx8-meet-today-102321/

My rx8 is a Sport-Package, mostly stock - RB intake + duct, RB Catback, Azenis 245/40/18 615 tyres, Axis Ulltimate Brakes.

dannobre's RX8 has, off the top of my head - 275/35?/18 Azenis on enkei rims, RacingBrakes big brake upgrade, RP STS, GReddy Catback, and JIC coil-overs. His is also a GT package car.

Just in the door, and seated I'm a little disappointed I didn't spring the $3500? extra for the GT package. The leather seats feel VERY nice - more supportive than my cloth. The entire interior has a more-serious feel to it. Speaking of 'more-serious'...

The driving experience is head and shoulders above my car. The entire car feels connected to the road in a way my car can't muster. Precision is the word of the day. Words like 'knife-edge' and 'razor (no, not the phone)' fill my mind. When I think about turning, the car goes. And the car executes those thoughts FLATLY - but very much in control. I noticed a bit more bounce - quite a bit, actually, but the car never felt nervous. While my time in the car was regulated to freeways, I did manage about half-an-on-ramp where I could carry a bit of speed. Drama free, as expected. The big 275s at all corners could have had VHT-squirters, because there was never a hint of any funny-business. Driving up the cork-screw ramps to the top of the parking garage, Dan's car was flat and composed and perfectly fine. On the way down in my car, I got motion sickness. Cliche! Alert!: "The car felt PLANTED and ROOTED to the ground."

The Sound - ya know? I LOVE Racing Beat Products. I'm VERY disappointed with their cat-back, however. The sound from the GReddy is MUCH better - Better in terms of sounding 'sporty' or 'aggressive'. Where I have to strain to hear the RB exhaust, the GReddy (without droning) screams to life as the RPMs rise. Seriously, if ANYONE reading this has a GReddy and feels it's TOO loud, I'll do a direct swap with ya - you cover your shipping, and I'll cover mine.

It's not just the handling and the sound - but Dan's car seems MUCH more interested in going straight, too. No doubt the STS makes a good difference - I LOVE it. While driving my car on the way home, I felt a bit like I was REACHING for each gear detent. I honestly felt as though I was ROWING gears. Anyone ever driven a 1960s or 1970s International Scout with a floor-mounted 4 speed Manual? The shifter would move about 8" each direction, it seemed. I couldn't exactly place 'why', but his car seems to have more power in mid and upper ranges of the tach. I think (Or I hope) I figured it out.

Suspension. Yeah, that's right. I wrote that. :D

While driving my car yesterday I noticed my car spends a good deal of time squatting and diving. When I step on the 'gas' pedal, before the car moves, the ****-end squats, and the bonnet shoots skyward. Then it goes. When I stop, the car takes a dive like it's A-Rod's Batting Average, and the butt shoots to the sky like a cat in heat. I'm pretty convinced if my car could more-adequately transfer that motion to the ground, the car would feel quicker, and feel better under braking, too.

My 'must purchase' list includes:

RP STS
GReddy CatBack

My "It'd be nice" list starts off with Leather interior (If I had to do it over again, I'd have gone GT to begin with), I have Coilovers at the house already, but I'm certainly going to save for lighter-weight wheels, too.

Good review! I just got the GReddy catback installed on sunday, and it sounds awesome!

Now to pair it up with a midpipe...

Glad you like it....All I really need now is a bit more ZOOM. I know what I want.....I just need to sell one of my children to buy it

Thanks again for the Airport shuttle....Seven Stock was awesome!

Get a midpipe for your RB exaust...it will be good then. The Greddy is very loud with a midpipe and high flow CAT.

Thanks for the write-up. I enjoyed reading it. It makes me want to try a modded 8. I am curious about how an upgraded suspension will feel.

I may just have to buy, and test. Bu tthat won't be for a while probably.

Darin, very good reading there.

+1 For the GT package. I could not go without my leather.

Ok Dannobre, what size are those wheels? I like the idea of 275s, but I am worried I would need to roll the fenders or put up with some other nonsense with wheels that size.

Otherwise I have a good start on the 'Dannobre'/'Swoope' model - a Ti with an EVO-R spolier.

I am not sure why we have drited in this direction together, but I hope it saves me some expensive mistakes!

Wheels are Enkei 18X9.5 45 offset from Goodwin Racing.

They fit with 275or 285/35/18 tires with no rubbing issues and no rolling anything unless it's really slammed........like 25.5 inches...too low too drive anyway

+1 for the GT package.

This is the first car I've bought 100% on my own (right after college and good job) and i HAD To have the leather, no one in my family has ever had a car with leather. The sunroof is a bonus, at the time I was super excited about the Bose "premium" audio package, but that has passed seeing as how today I orderd 744 dollars worth of audio equipment to upgrade to.

I swore to myself I wouldnt mod until the car is paid off, but that didnt work out. I do get lots of credit though exactly 365 days after i signed the papers I only owe 8K on it (down from 28K) Got a full mazdaspeed suspension (100 worth it), Rotary Performence SuperCAT, Racing Beat Exhaust, and other various little mods. Mazsports Type I turbo is at the top of the list right now.

Hmm, it was not a Bose audio package as I remember it. The Bose automatically came with another package, probably the sunroof or appearance package or spoiler package. All I remember is, I could not delete the Bose as it was attached to something else.

Did you install them simultaneously? Is your exhaust louder than your car's engine using the super cat?
