Destroying Threads
I've seen you say this a few times but I have yet to hear anything like that from anyone but you... where are you getting this from? if you had any substantial evidence I'd go along with it, but you just kinda say it with no proof. Ignoring lemons, is there actually a greater number of manuals dying faster? And wouldnt a huge part of MT wear be the driver and their technique?
I am just stating this on the **** load of threads I have been seeing on people complaining about dead synchros and grinding, a shitload of grinding that is, in specially 1st and 2nd gear of the MT........
compared to the ATs where you barely see anyone complain about stuff like that
and yes, numerically, the MTs are dying more than the AT seeing as there are more MTs to die than do ATs, especially on this forum
and I owned both an AT 07 and now an MT rx8..........

I stated that on my post that if you do abuse and race it, then ofcourse the MT will wear out and die faster than the AT, and seriously, how bad can u abuse the AT 8? the tranny barely let u abuse anything, what, keep it constantly redline or something?

Thanks for the input fellas. And yes, I'm positive he wont care about the speed factor, he knows nothing about cars.
"LOL Hey, you came to an 8 forum, you have to expect some friendly trash talkin"

haha ^
So my dad bought it! What are some cool, relatively cheap, good looking mods? I want to buy him something for Christmas. I'm taking a road trip with my girlfriend from here (Colorado) to Florida where he lives. I'll help him install it and whatnot, I'm pretty stoked.

There are tons of mods that make a fun project, just as long as you don't expect any performance gains. There are some well-made, nice sounding exhausts available. Take a look at Hymee Enhanced, Racing Beat, and Mazdaspeed dual-can catbacks. Racing Beat sway bars are good too, they really reduce the body roll to about nothing. Lightened flywheels actually give a respectable performance boost but then you're looking at dropping the tranny and I dunno if you want to get that involved. All of these are under $1000.

I'll snap his neck.
You could probably pick up a cheap set of stock 18 inch wheels to replace the 16s that come on the base auto.
Also, just an FYI - I believe the base auto has a softer suspension than the MT and the "higher" autos.
For the 05s, consumer's digest rated the MT acceleration a 7 out of 10. The 4-port AT was a 6 out of 10. Not sure what exact tests they do, but this tells me there isn't as enormous a difference as some people think, at least not at the lower end. If you are running some high speed tracks I would see the MT as definitely being faster. But I did pretty well at my one and only track day for a beginner. The 4-ports I believe are tuned differently to deliver more power down low.

I wouldn't sweat the auto. Sounds like your dad's got a good deal. Nothing wrong w/ 4 ports. They can flow plenty. The limiting factor on the motor is not the ports but the tranny. How many auto trannies you see shifting at 9K?
Maintaining the car is key. Checking oil levels and changing plugs and wires every 15k. If he does that it will last a long time and run great.
Sounds like a good fit for him to me.
