Se the mechanic called, and it is the spring, they wanted to replace the whole mechanism But I informed them you can replace just the spring. If they replaced the whole thing I might just get another crappy spring :/

Good luck finding a proper spring. I just replaced mine with one out of a low mileage wrecked one.

Mechanic charged $200 for the job, he couldn't find a spring so he used the one that was already there some how. Glad I didn't have to do it, the job looked intense!

That's cheap, I would have paid way more than that because fixing it was a pain in the ***.

It was a pain in the ***, at least for me, because of being careful about not breaking other parts involved in the process getting to the spring.

Yep, at one point I seriously was about to start cutting ****. That is when I decided to take a break and let my buddy (grungepup) take a whack at it and that was a good move because he was able to get the door open so we could replace the assembly.

jumper battery on the starter connections works just fine. i've had to pop open a few jaguars like that since the trunk is electronically activated so you cannot get to the battery which is in the trunk.

takes a minute to do, assuming your power passenger lock works still.

Ya, lesson learned. Though, if I ever end up in that situation again something is gonna get broken!

i just ran into a similar situation today with my car, except it was the interior door handle cable to the latch. frayed and broke i disassembled it to figure out the problem and called the dealer. not to my surprise they only sell the cables with the latch mechanism for $175... seems to be a less common issue since nothing popped up with a search so i just started gutting the door to figure it out.

removed the frayed cable from the sheath, cut a length of stainless tie wire, fed it through the sheath and looped the ends. $.75 repair and a big middle finger to Mazda for being so narrow sighted. i thought about a bicycle cable through the original sheath but the ends are particularly shaped.

door opened fine from the outside but wouldn't open from the inside. for those who run into a problem like that.

edit: and the window regulator mounting on these cars is simply retarded. do not remove the window motor, just the 2 10mm nuts holding the regulator to the plastic chassis so you can swing it out of the way. with a little practice you can get the door latch mechanism out in under 10 minutes. if the door is jammed shut with a broken return spring though... good luck with that.

Good job, usually it is the spring that breaks, and that sucks because it breaks with the latch in the locked position so getting the door open to actually work on it is the worst thing ever. Just imagine trying to remove the door panel with the door closed. i seriously considered cutting the damn thing off and just getting a new door panel. I eventually got it off but then you are only partly done since you then need to get the door unlocked..........

Mine did the same thing but my issue was the actuator not turning (gear internally was worn) but i decided to just replace the entire latch, with cable and actuator assembly. Ordered it from mazmart.

Glad everything worked out for you sir.
