I almost did this once, I was in an unfamiliar area and couldn't find a gas station for the life of me. I figured I had maybe 3 miles before I ran out of gas, so I took the bitch way out -- called AAA and had them bring me another gallon of fuel and point me towards a gas station. Did you have any problems starting it after you ran the tank dry? I figured the rotary might be a little sensitive to running out of gas and might have trouble starting up again without mechanic assistance.

Now I did do the exact same thing you did in a Dodge Dart -- ran out of gas and coasted into a station at 5 MPH And my RX-8's gas gauge isn't 100% accurate either, sometimes I've only gone 15 or 25 miles and it's dropped below 3/4, yet the last 1/2 tank goes on for a lot longer.
