Does this gas milage sound right ?
 

I just got my '04 RX-8. I filled the tank yesterday and after driving only 34 miles, I'm already down to 3/4 full. Does this sound right ? If not should I take it to the dealership to see that the emissions recall was done correctly ?

hmmm so a full tank for u would get u 136 miles.. thats def not right... thats like less than 10 miles per gallon.. but some people here on the board get gas mileage like that.. dealership wont do anything for u. You should clean the MAF sensor with a CRC MAF sensor cleaner.. that will help..

oh yeah.. ur driving a rx8.. its a sports car.. its going to get a hummer mileage! haaha

I noticed the same thing after the recall but by the end of the first tank the miles travelled was normal and the tank after was normal. If this is the first tank after the recall then keep an eye on it and relax for now...

How is the car running?

If I was you, I'd do a quick search on mileage for this information, and ask a moderator to delete this thread before you get mega-flamed

I did a search and came up with alot of posts on what was normal gas milage for this car. Sorry if I'm posting a question that has been answered a million times. When I post a search on gas milage, I'm not reading every post. The results pull up every post with the words "gas" and "milage" in them. I'm trying to base what I read off of the thread title.

So please, mediator, don't delete my post.

I have a solution,

1) go to the dealer.
2) go up to the manager
3) place your keys in his hand.
4) ask for your money back.
5) go buy a honda cause you don't deserve to drive an RX8

Was at Mazda today, and the cx7 is at 18/24 also.
WTF Mazda.

I've heard that after the Engine recall flash that the mileage drops off a bit. So I would make it known to the dealer at this point. And suggest that you are going to run another tank of gas throught it. Talk to the service dept. and have them document it, for future reference .Then if it doesn't improve then you can have them take a look at it.
And I hope you are useing a NAME BRAND gas like Shell / Mobil / Chevron.
And try premium if your not using it.

Is there a possibility that you didn't actual top the fuel up completely? maybe you thought you did but didnt.

the scientist in me says await the next refill and repeat your driving style. if it happens again, you have confidence in a problem of sorts. if not, don't worry.

Thanks for the advise Easy E1. I did run High (93) octane. Used Hess gas.

40 miles 1st quarter, 88.4 miles 2nd quarter, then a little more for the 3rd quarter of the tank. I do not drive into the last quarter tank.

Good point. You could be right. I didn't do anything differently than any other vehicle I've owned. Pumped the gas until it shut off. Started the car the needle was pointing to full. I'll keep an eye on the milage from this point.

It could be worse...what if your odometer is set to km instead of miles? :)

On a more serious note...be patient, and check your mileage over at least two tanks.

Keep in mind that if you get close to the official EPA mileage, you're not having nearly as much fun with the car as you should.

finish a whole tank first, you can't predict your mileage from a 1/4 of a tank, its just an analog gauge for the tank.

also the cx7 does a good 24-26 mpg on the highway, sometimes in a blue moon a tad more.

Through reported mpg, we can really tell who is spending the 5-6 minutes for a full warmup, and those who aren't.

For those who do, that's 10 or 12 minutes a day just sitting there in the vehicle moving zero amount of miles and dropping your miles-per-gallon figure like a brick.

If we only realized this simple truth, the confusion between the 13 mpg drivers, and the 22 mpg drivers would end.

Figure about 4 or 5 days worth of driving before each fillup: for those who spend the time warming-up, that's 40-60 minutes of driving lost. Ask yourself, how far can you travel in 40, or 60 minutes? Calculate that, and see if it makes up the disparity in your low mpg.

Well I could talk mpg all day and still not get tired. Why not give it a try?

FYI, i get about 40 miles before my need starts reading 3/4. Thats getting on it occassionally. I was shocked at first myself becuase i was used to other cars in the past going maybe 75 miles before the needle was in 3/4 mark. For what it is worth, I get about 220-230 before the yellow low fuel light comes on. and when i fill it its 12 gallons, so i probably had 3 more gallons before i be running on fumes. On avg, i get about 200 miles per tank when driving aggressive or on the freeway doing 75-85mph. So imo 30 some miles is normal for the car to dip down. In fact, i just filled up this morning and came back home and i drove 27 miles and it was already at the 3/4 mark. You have nothing to worry about, just have fun with the car. I say if you get 17-19MPG on avg. your within range of a normal RX-8 fuel consumption.

but you really can't judge anything accurately till you've got several tanks under your belt and are able to calculate based on fill up amount. A sample rate of one is useless. And you don't even have that much..

Yeah I get around 17-19mpg too on average. Plus the gas gauge is not evenly divided so when you are 3/4 full, i don't think you used up 1/4 of gas but more like 1/5 or 1/6. I think car makers do that so when you hit bottom of gas gauge, you can still go on for a while.

No, mine is almost dead accurate. Each 1/4th tank = 40-50 mpg. When the needle goes even with empty, I have to fill up immediately. I once pushed it and the car actually ran out of gas as I pulled up into the gas station.

my needle is like yours typej, plus it stays at half a tank for awhile then shoots to 1/4

i get anywhere betn 200- 220 on a tank of gas and approx 55-60miles in the first quarter and somwhere around 110Miles when it reaches the half tank mark

I generally wait 2 mins in the morning and then drive slowly not revving over 4k until the engine is warm and after a good 10 - 15 min drive I bleep it :)

That is what I see in my car. First 1/4 tank is about 40. I get 160 to 170 before the low fuel light comes on, That puts me about 11 to 12 mpg......Sucks.

The gas gauge is pretty flaky in the 8, it will read differently in the winter cold then it dose in the summer heat. You need to see what your total MPG is to determine if you have a problem. If you find yourself in a range that is general consider exceptable in the 8 count your blessing and enjoy the car. If your car is showing horrible mileage numbers then start drinking. Mazda will run a simple computer diagnostic and if it show nothing is wrong they will proclaim you car is working fine and show you the door. Once they hear MPG they turn a deaf ear to your problem, you are basically screwed.

Ugh, I didn't read this till today- but you cannot judge how bad your fuel mileage will be by looking at the tank. By the time I get to that quasi 3/4 mark, I've gone anywhere between 30-60 miles. It's not an exact mark- none of them are. Like everyone's saying, you have to fill it up a few times before you can begin to see where your mileage is at. The fuel tank marks are more of a suggestion about where the fuel level is than any concrete gauge.
