I believe it only happens in cold weather. I just had mine done so we will both have to wait until next year to find out hopefully.

I read about this modidication at the dealer. It seems to be just a tube inserted into the dipstick to prevent the foam from touching the dipstick. It does not prevent foaming just prevents you from seeing it.

It also includes a new dipstick that has the raised dots on it for gaugeinghow low the oil is.

You do know that the gunk doesn't go away with this "fix". It just stays in the engine where you don't see it. The only thing the "fix" does is hide the gunk from the owner and saves a visit to service.

I've got a visit scheduled for the same thing.. Personally I'd rather hide the "crisco" then have to wipe it off 5 times for me to be able to read the oil level.. :P

The new dipstick sounds like a good idea as well.. I just hope the "dots" are easier to read then the two lines.

Well maybe I just drive too much, I hardly see any stuff on my stick and it’s up around the top when it’s there. I just don’t like leaving my car at dealerships when I don’t really have to. There are too many bad things that can happen at a dealership so why go there if you don’t really need to?

I actually got some "gunk" this winter. I was almost happy, like "hey look!, me too!"

If I got it with our mild winter, I'm sure somewhere really cold it can get bad enough to interfere with reading the stick. Plus, the reference marks on the new dipstick make it easier to understand how "low" you actually are since the scale is not linear. And the smaller diameter probably makes insertion a bit easer. The only thing I'd worry about is what happens to this insert material after you've checked the oil a couple hundred times?
