I hope u told the grease monkies to watch it driving your car up on the lift cause your front end is LOW! I already had the alignment guys smash my front end.

 

So I just got a call back from the manager over at Mazda. Seems like the noise is def comming from the diff. He had a conversation with the engineers over at Mazda and I guess there are a handful of 2009s with this issue and so far just a few 2010s. He is going to drain and flush the fluid and add a friction modifier and test again.

Mods, i know that by now the thread title is not very informative... maybe we can prepend the title with "Diff Noise - ... "

 

we use the same torsen diff right ? hmm those units are pretty reliable.

add friction modifier? lol ? I don't think that will solve any "hardware" issue.

 

I believe we do, well I am not sure if it is an actual hardware issue or a fluid issue. Hopefully there wont be chunks of metal and teeth pouring out when he opens up that drain plug lol

 

So here is an update guys. Got my car back today, they did a drain and flush, and refil of the diff. They filled with SAE 80W-90, not sure what was in there before. They also added some of the ford friction modifier. No more noise so far. Actually the car feels far smoother on the sharp turns that used to give me problems. They even gave me a case number and MoA is keeping the number open for a few weeks incase I have further trouble.

Quite happy with the results. I was actually shootin the **** with the tech after our drive and he commended me on the suspension set up and talked about how its one of the first setups he has seen in a while that have been done right heh. All in all a good experience minus the first little bit of day 1.

I will keep you guys posted, but thumbs up on Mazda of Manchester for teh work.

 

good to see that changing the oil in diff fixed it for you as well as it did for me. I went with redline 75W90 and it seems to be working out well so far.

did they look at your transmission grinding issue? I think I may be developing a grind shifting into sixth gear.

 

Well after driving with the tech, its not really "grinding" its more of a "clunk" into gear. Usually happens on a cold engine and he said its pretty normal when the tranny fluids are cold for it to clunk a bit.

On another note, the dealer said this was the first one they had seen like this. They also ordered a complete differential to replace it with.

I have a 2006 with 20K on it and would notice a grrring sound when starting from a stop turning right or left. It did not happen taking off straight. It would be noticeable when the car had been driven awhile and really warmed up. I did not notice it when it was not driven far or long. Once I had driven 1/2 way across the state and when I pulled away from a curb, it sounded just awful and I checked to see if one of my wheels was loose because it sounded like the wheel lugs could have been loose.

I thought I better take it in which is a pain because the dealer is far away. After I was in service for awhile, the manager finally came up and said the rear end was shot. They took the plate off and the oil smelled bad and there were metal shavings in it. I had to leave town for a month and said I could bring it back after that for the repair but they would not even let me drive it off the lot and gave me a loaner car for as long as I needed.

I had noticed the noise for probably almost a year before I took it in.

Thank goodness for Warranty.

 

Oh wow, yea luckily I had no garbage inside my diff. They said when they drained the diff the oil looked ok and there were no clumps or shavings. I probably caught the issue just in time.

 

So what was it paimon?

 

I have a feeling in the end you still gonna end up with a broken rear diff.

Fluid might mask the problem for a while. lets just hope that when it happens you still have warranty.

 

Well i believe it was the rear diff. After a flush and additive it seems to be running perfectly and no noise

Hopefully not, but at least I have documented proof that I did report this early. Even a case number over at MoA so hopefully that stands for something if something should happen
