These automatic vs manual threads bore the hell out of me. The difference in performance isn't just the launch. It's everything. Just view my signature if you get a chance.

Because the auto sucks ***.

This thread doesn't even deserve a piece of pie, I'm giving it a damn cupcake.

Hey...I'm not an automatic hater...I mean ****, I owned one, remember? I just hope for future auto owners sake that the upcoming 06 ATs will offer somewhat acceptable performance this time around.

AT 8 is a joke of a car in its' price range that offers very little except looks and a quiet engine. Spend 34k elsewhere and you'll get a much better car with much better mileage. If you're a cripple and can't operate a stickshift but want an 8 regardless of its' flaws, then more power to you. Other than that I don't see any reason why someone would buy an AT 8 and then track it... mazda made a serious blunder when they released the seriously slow and laughable A/T 8.

now, I'm just gonna sit and wait for the cripples, chics, dudes who refuse to learn stickshifts and the daily commuters who deal with heavy traffic to flame my ***...

Yeah, that's a little off, the RX-8 auto is slow but not that slow. My guess is he had traction control on or wasn't shifting in mnual mode.

a MT 8 running 17 sec. 1/4 miles? C'mon. You don't need a high RPM launch to do a good launch, an ideal launch yes but you can still have a good launch with moderate RPMs. But to say that without a high RPM launch the 6 port is "right up there with an auto" is plain retarded.

I love my manual rx8 but let's face it, the car is a dog off the line. Having said that, you can do 0 to 60 in around 6.1 secs if you drive it like you hate it. What I like though is the way it pulls when in 3rd or 4th above 4000 rpm; sweet music and smooth sailing.

I've seen a decent amount of high 15 second MT RX-8s with a couple low 16 second passes. 17 seconds is certainly pushing it and you'd have to be a pretty awful driver to pull it off.

Umm, no. You can easily take off just like from a stoplight and still get 85mph trap speeds and a 15.xx 1/4 mile time. Hell on one run I had a 1.06 R/T and was shifting early just messing around- and still got 15.955@85mph in 4th gear....that was my worse run ever. Next time I go to the strip I will do a run without any extra rpm drop but i'll redline shift and I'll do it on my street tires at normal tire pressure.

17 sec is Extremely slow, I have a hard time believing that even the "lowly auto" would get times like that. You may want to get a compression test or something just to be sure.

I also beg to differ that the rx8 isn't about acceleration. The rx8 is about acceleration, braking, turning, shifting....all of the above

And FYI running at the strip is actually a lot more fun than I thought it would be. Don't knock it 'till you tried it

Ok people, stop wasting posts by saying "you shoulda gotten manual" or "auto sucks"

I had a suspicion that my AUTO RX-8 is not performing the way it should be. Like I said in my original post, my car felt sluggish and unresponsive lately and the track run confirmed my suspicion. So I am guessing something is not right with my car. Auto RX-8 should do quarter mile in 16.8 sec!

I had traction control off (not just DSC) and I was in tiptronic mode in both times. Tires are fairly new and properly inflated. Gas was half full. I did power braking both times although I read somewhere it's useless in Auto RX-8 somewhere.

Now tell me, since you guys are geniuses, what should I check to see if there is something wrong with my car? If I do compression check or something, what is the normal numbers? How do I check if I have bad spark plugs? How do I know if engine is getting proper fuel/air mixtures? RX-8 with any transmission with quarter-mile times of 17.8 isn't acceptable!!!!!

According to that thread, it seems like power loss is rather frequently reported with RX-8s. How do I detect bad cat? I am gonna go talk to my dealer soon to figure this out.

I can't just trade cars in without trying to fix it or make it right. I have kept all my previous cars about 10 years before parting with them. I know there is something wrong with my car... Auto RX-8 shouldn't be that slow.

Take it to the dealer, even 4 cyclinders accords/camrys can do 0-60 in 11 secs... Try searching the forum, the 4ports been known to have problems

For the plugs you can pull them and look at them, it is easy to tell if they are bad. For the compression test I would have a dealer do this and they can check the numbers. A bad Cat the easiest way is to remove it from the car and take a physical look at it, since it is under warranty I would have the dealer do this too.

Oh and dont tell the dealer about your 1/4 mile times, it gives them a reason if they want to claim abuse. It will just be easier if you dont volunteer this information.

traction control means squat in the AT for 0-60 or 1/4 mile times. Not enough power to spin the wheels even with brake torquing. Full auto mode shifts at 7000rpm, so a 0-61mph time of 11 seconds seems to indicate something wrong with the vehicle.

You should be able to find compression numbers in the tech section of the forums. And a canscan unit of some sort can give you A/F values, or any dyno operator (which would also tell you if you're having power issues).

the rx-8 is really slow off the line. Lack of torque, agian.
But I know this car is the fastest I've owned and then the second was a mazda6.
I have a 6 speed m/t and i definately think its quick once you get past 4000 RPMs in first gear and let it redline and going into second your gone.
And I think i read that some guy was running mid to high 13s (?) in his.

The fastest stock auto RX8 0-60 time i've seen is mid to high 8s. Your 1/4mi time should be high 16s low 17s. These A/T-M/T threads are rediculous--there will always be a faster car--besides everyone has an a$$hole...er opinion.

Maybe on the cars you drive. Not me. I could give a **** about 1/4 mile performance, unless it's a 1/4 mile autocross lap.

If what you were saying is true then how come auto designers spend so much time, money and effort dialing in the handling of a car. Get a clue. Drive around a corner every now and again.

Fun thing is I could go to a junkyard right now and assemble a car for $5000 that would run 13 second quarters - give me a 67 Chevelle with a Chevy small block, highrise manifold, a big 4 barrell, high flow Holley carb, , 3 speed Hydramatic with a short shift kit transmission, a "short center" drag rearend with a low (numerically high ratio - like something in the mid 4's) ratio rear differential, Hoosier "wrinkle slicks" on the back end and narrow Goodrich drag tires on the front and a set of drag racing traction bars on the back (allow the rear axle to displace and control wheel hop) ... rock and roll - low 14's upper 13's in the quarter. All for $5k or less. I know this because I have two friends that have done it.

And it can't turn a corner at more than 20 mph without spinning out. What's the point of that.

When you grow up you will understand.
