The only thing I dislike after owning two RX-8s for a total of almost 3 years is the gas mileage.
The part that gets to me about mileage is the range, not the cost. My daily commute is 40 miles round trip. Add a little weekend driving, and I have to fill up every five or six days. That keeps me from getting into a weekly rhythm. Also on long trips, especially at night when smaller places are closed, I need a bit more situation awareness about fuel level and services.

Just wanted to ask some questions first, see what u guys think from your experience. I am a little weary on the 15mpg i think it gets and the premium gas it drinks adding to my wallet, Is it really that bad from everyones experience or no? Second i like near Albany, NY so snow is a big thing here rear wheel drive and snow dont mix. Most imporantly there are 2 ive seen and narrowed it down to an 04 dark gray(not my fav) gt black leather interior for 15.5k or an 06 rx8 black (very hot) with rims an pioneer nav sysem and black/red 2 tone leather interior rims and intake/exhaust buts its like 18-19k which is too pricey what do u guys think in your opinion?
You are clearly chopping off all of your reasons for wanting it. Do not get it

-It gets bad as mileage
-RWD isn't sufficient enough for you during snow
-A color you do not like
-Too expensive

Edit: I'm not being mean, I'm just basing my suggestion off of what you said. I say those with respect, and not immaturity.

ok so just so i clarify my original post i was just curious as to your experiences with the gas, its definitely not one of my deal breaking factors. The winter i indeed plan to get some of the best snow tires i can get my hands on and i was told there are some canada rx8 owners on here that drive all year so i guess well just have to see. My tc was never too good in the snow either. I basicaly tryin to search my butt off right now to find a good deal

if your already worried about the mpg dont get it plus its not as easy to maintain as a tc do your research and if you think your up for the challenge go for it

if you thought the FWD TC got around bad wait till RWD 8....FWD is the next best thing to snow other than AWD/4WD....RWD is (in my opinion) the worst thing to get to drive in snow....the money you will spend on a set of snow tires you could buy a cheap winter beater likeI did when in pa...spend 350 bucks for the car drove fine no probs and kept the 8 for summer...just my 2cents

a cheap winter beater
Usually a good idea. I kept my '87 Accord as a winter beater. Not for all winter, just for snow days. But things don't always work out neatly.

This past winter I had two 400 mile round trips where snow was a factor. It had just snowed before one, and was threatening on the other. I took the beater both times...only prudent thing to do. So I did 800 miles in a worn out beater instead of the 8. And the roads turned out to be OK. Not necessarily OK for the stock summer tires, but nowhere near Blizzak.

So unless you're going to park the 8 all winter, and drive a POS daily, you need to do something about winter tires. My OE tires just wore out, and I replaced them with all seasons.

^yeah if u park all winter(which I did) I didn't have to worry about the extra money for tires but if not Blizzaks used to be some of the best.

The only difference when driving the RX-8 vice other cars is the necessity to check the oil level more frequently.

Going easy on it until it warms up is a necessity, but how many cars do you recommend jumping into and gunning it while it's still cold?
That's my only big gripe too, but I realized it when I bought my car. If you drive a lot, then daily driving the 8 will be expensive just on gas. Say you drive 300-400 miles a week. If you did all those in the 8, it'd be pretty pricey on gas. So it might be necessary to have a economic commuter car.

I'm satisfied so far with my beater commuter car. It gets 30mpg and is way faster then my 8. I still miss the 8 though if that says anything (I still have her but not for long)..and I'm totally buying another rx8 in a year or so. They're the ****.

This is the truth. If you're DD the 8 in the winter then you NEED snow tires. I had all seasons and they did fine when they were meaty, but when the tread started going away I got into an accident on black ice. A set of blizzaks should last a couple winters IMO.

yea i realize FWD is better in the snow but the car just doesnt have the best handling to begin with. I have no problem i have no problem buying snow tires i believe blizzaks were the ones i purchased for my tc and i spend a good 5-600 bucks on the falkens for the summer. I do drive a decent amount but i think the rx8 is pretty sexy and my cars always end up being my baby so im sure that ill have no problem giving her some TLC. I was originally thinkin of 3 cars 350z g35 or the rx8 and the rx8 always seemed to turn my head plus it has a backseat unlike the z. I tryin to not get carried away to much and find the right deal but i have been know to be the i want it now kinda guy haha :P

^ take your time with your 8 purchase. get the best deal. im the same way and when I bought my 8 I wanted it now. Now I can't afford it cuz I didnt research my purchase and got a bad deal on the car being ignorant to what they're worth. Take your time.

Tell me about it. After a frustrating time shopping for a car that suited my needs, I discovered the 8 in Motor Trend's "All the cars in the world" annual. I think it was only five days later that I had Zoomy.

The deal was somewhat simplified in that I bought new, and my brother works for Ford, so I got S plan, no negotiating.

BTW - anything I've said in this thread that might be construed as negative isn't a complaint. It's just detail.

No i appreciate all the help and the heads up without talking to you guys i wouldnt have know about there being issues with the 04-05's and to aim for the 06+. I'm still kinda curious if anyone has any experience or knowledge with the whole ebay car buying scene though because theres a very limited selection around here that im seeing but there are a few on ebay. To me buying something that expensive off ebay seems kinda shady though.

Ebay is just another source for finding a car.

If you choose to go the ebay route, then you treat it like any non-local purchase...

1. Get the VIN and run a carfax before investing time in travel
2. Make plans to bring the car back with you, and more importantly to NOT bring it back at all.
3. Inspect the car in person, and bring along someone who knows something about cars and is an objective 3rd party.
4. Negotiate (bid on the car) the deal after confirming the title is in hand and clear of liens/salvage/etc.

I got mine from auto trader. I live in Pa and drove the whole way to Ga to get my 8, and it was the best deal compared to the almost ten places I went to in Pa. The way I look at the better gas is a 10gal tank of 87 is $25 and the same tank of 93 is $26-27 depending on how much more is cost at certain stations (Exxon is .20 higher the 87, and our kwik fill is only .10 higher then 87).

My trip was good until I got to the south when all the oil problems were going on, hardly no gas anywhere, and we didn't think we were going to make it since I didn't want to put 87 in it, but at last there was one that had 93, and when I filled it up I had a little less then a 1/4 tank of gas.

It might of seemed far, but the deal I got was amazing, plus I only spent about 150 in gas total trip. I had another vehicle, 99 vehicross that I owed $6500 on and they paid it completely off and I still got the 8 for $13900 out the door without them adding anything to it with a good long warrenty also.
