The AirBag thing did sound a bit strange. I know that the M3 all that ID Code (VIN) to prevent theft of stripping a car. The doors and all major body parts that have harnesses are coded including the AirBag and Seats.

For what it's worth, $1000 to have leather installed is a pretty good price. I wanted an RX-8 WITH leather and WITHOUT a sunroof (cuts into headroom and raises the CG of the car) but, unless I lived in Canada, it isn't available from Mazda NA. So, I bought a Sport model with the plan of getting leather installed in a few years when I tired of the cloth interior. I think the price range I saw was about $1200 to $1500.
