Dealer Price Gouging

Dealer Price Gouging
I've just read about what the new RX-8 pricing will be about and am pleased. However, is Mazda and/or Ford doing anything to ensure that the dealers do not gouge the price of the car. This type of practice is offensive to consumers and does not reflect of the dealerships as much as on the car company, namely Mazda. I hope that Mazda is paying attention to this site and has the foresight to prevent this unscrupulous practice.

Donny boy, I love your enthusiasm! One thing you may want to do, however, is do a quick search before posting a new topic. Many of the new posts lately have been hashed and re-hashed more than once. Please don't take that as a criticism, we've got only a limited number of topics to discuss here, so it's inevitable. Just a suggestion that you'll find a lot more answers much more quickly that way.
One thing that's been discussed many, many times is that there are plenty of dealers out there that have been taking deposits with a written guarantee that they will charge no more than MSRP for the car. If I thought I was going to try to buy one soon after they came out, I'd find a local dealer that would agree to that and get on their list. The other thing that's come up in each of the other posts about this is that Mazda has extremely little control over what dealers charge. In the U.S. it's legal for the dealer to charge whatever they want, and since the dealerships aren't owned by Mazda there's little they can do about it.
I posted a fairly long message on the second page of the above-cited thread, so I won't offer any more thoughts here for now.

Thanks for the input from everyone.
I've heard that BMW has tight reins on the dealers that sell the Mini and prevent them from killing the car with too much of a markup. Just hoping that Mazda/Ford does the same.
