Changing engines
So, it will be 5 years in July since I bought my RX-8.
Next week the dealer will be installing a new engine ( 3rd engine).
Since I first owned the car, it strikes me that virtually every problem I have had with this car has been related to the engine.
1st year:
Lack or power - rebate
Engine replaced at 9,000 kilometers, 7 weeks in the shop.
Stranded on a road trip due to abysmal gas mileage.
Can not drive in most of winter as no block heater viable, and if one floods it on startup? You are basically screwed.
2nd year: Lots of research into the low power issues.
Did the Canzoomer project, got into that whole set of work and fun
Results? Yes. Lot of work? Also yes.
4 years: Another engine.
All to get something I paid for and was supposed to get in the first place:
A 250HP engine.
Every year: Hard starting, replacing spark plugs, recovering from the odd flood, generally dissatisfied with the power.
So, I still love the car, would gladly keep it, except for the POS engine.
There, I said it, I spoke the sacrilege:
This rotary is a total POS!
As of this summer my powertrain warranty is gone: 5 years over and done.
My resale value totally sucks. I paid $42K new for the 8 in the summer of 2003.
That was list. Now they sell the same model for as low as 32K in Canada and 27K in the USA.
With only 38,000km on it (24,000 miles) I will be lucky to get $18K for the car!
Which brings up the question:
Why not put in a real engine?
So, I start the thread:
If one were to swap engines into an RX-8 what would be best?
Best power/maintenance/characteristics?
Easiest to install with least modifications?
Would a transmission change be necessary or is there something that can bypass this?
I am thinking something along the lines of the small BMW V6, or perhaps the engine from the Mitsubishi EVO, or.. ?
