DSC/TCS can obviously save your *** if something unexpected happens, and getting it as well as fog lights/HIDs for $1k is an excellent deal. So go with the sports package if you can swing it (as I wrote previously here).
On the other hand, the stock headlights are quite good and I've driven through a couple winters in hilly western New England in my base 6-speed without any problems (Not only sans DSC/TCS, but also on all-seasons. I run them 4-5 months/year and the stock summer tires 7-8 months/year). So if you're on a tight budget, you don't *need* the sports package for Winter driving.

I pick up the black 8 with sport package this Friday, would be sooner but I will be out of town until then. Thanks to all for the advice, I will try post pics when I get it home.
ALP22 - Nice to hear from a neighbor, I am getting mine from Vincent, Holtz was giving me a similar run-around with my trade in. Besides, Vincent was the only dealer that had any in the Rochester area. Vincnet actaully had the only base 6 speed with sport package only within ~200 miles from Rochester. Is there a rochester 8 club? I saw a copper 8 yesterday near eastview mall. That you?
Anyway, thanks for all the advice. Oh, my insurance only went up ~$50/year with the new 8. (traded an 03 cavalier LS) - I know, I know- it was my first new car.
